i have been struggling with a big purchase i want to make like it's a life or death decision for months and i think this weekend i might just pull the trigger...

the thing is i COULD like m*leven! the set up is there! i thought it was cute in s1 and s2! the reunion scene in s2 was SO poignant and palpable because you could feel how lonely they both were, how much they missed each other, how important they both were to each other. and then they spend the next two seasons throwing stupid, contrived relationship problems at them and instead of fixing them in a way that builds any confidence, they slap them with a band aid that doesn’t address any of the actual issues. s3 is an issue from the get go with their fight being based around a lie that hopper basically forced onto mike, but still doesn’t get around to resolving the wedge that it’s put between them and the rest of the party. and now s4 has mike afraid to say i love you, despite having all but said it already, and having to use their gay coded (but not explicitly gay, despite their insistence that it would be made clear) character to prop them up instead of allowing any happiness in his own love life. all while relegating mike to the background in both of these seasons and giving him so little plot outside of el.

m*leven’s potential is there, but they simply do not know how to get these characters to work together outside of a puppy crush stage. they could do so much more. they could have such a genuine bond. but it’s becoming more and more apparent that they don’t have anything in common besides codependency

#byler #i’m frustrated i really am #it’s feels more and more like they just don’t know how to write a good romance #quite frankly i’m not a huge fan of j*pper or j*ncy either #lumax is the only canon couple i genuinely enjoy #and when SO much of the plot is based around love #specifically romantic love #(when they could be putting a much bigger emphasis on platonic love but that’s another rant)#it’s very distracting to just be so off put by the romances they’re shoving at us #i think the reason byler appealed to me so much is bc they really weren’t trying to write a romance #they were trying to write a friendship and succeed with that way more than any of their ships #whatever!!!!!#idk!!!!!!!!!#st4 spoilers #s4 spoilers #stranger things spoilers
