Hi!

Um, I'm a writer and I was wondering, how do you write a rape scene without it reading like smut?

The scene involves the character being drugged with an aphrodisiac. They still retain their mind but their body is all floppy and they are being forced to enjoy it.

Because I want to have detail, but I'm worried that people will find it erotic when that's not the point. Or that someone will think that the victim is into what's happening because of their physical responses despite my having them internally reiterate how little they want this, as they are usually an unreliable narrator.

hi hi!!! i think there's a few important tips i have about this.

first and foremost, though, above and beyond any kind of practical writing advice, i have this to say: at some point, it's going to be so important to let go of 'how are people going to interpret this rape scene.' i know that is so much easier said than done, trust me, i absolutely know. it's something that i stress about for SURE, especially since i started directly depicting sexual assault in my writing. however, at the end of the day, some people may find any depiction of sexual violence no matter how un-eroticized to be erotic. it's their job to keep that shit to themself unless there's direct indication that it was intended to be porn. it is disturbing and unacceptable to assume that a depiction of sexual violence was intended for sexual gratification and react accordingly (react as in saying things to you about it being hot, etc, their internal reaction is not something anyone can or should try to control), and if someone does that to your work, that is them making it weird and behaving inappropriately. depictions of sexual violence are not porn unless and until they are clearly intended to be so. i will not give an inch on that stance.

NOW! some actual writing advice that i hope you may find useful!!

the mental/emotional effect is a very powerful tool in your toolbox here. their physical body may be reacting but the emotional response to that physical sensation is really critical. horror, shame, disgust, violation, grief, anger, dissociation, etc. it's not required to avoid physical description of what is happening during the rape. it all depends on what feels right to the scene - sometimes detail enhances some part of it. sometimes skimming details helps keep the focus where you want it!

pay attention to what stands out to you about scenes of sexual violence that you've read and thought captured the impact you want to have! what parts of this scene are important to you to depict? what sort of language, what verbs and adjectives and nouns like the actual building blocks of language, stood out when you were reading? how can you use that language to help set the tone? (sometimes this is counter-intuitive: a character in a fic i'm working on thinks of his own rapes in extremely vulgar and sometimes pornographic terms in his own head, which highlights his state of mind and how he's seeing himself and what's happening to him, though it's clearly rape.)

i too recently had some serious anxiety around whether it would be clear or not that the assaults i was depicting were nonconsensual for a variety of reasons. i totally get it. with this specific character being an unreliable narrator, that emotional response is going to be your best friend. not just the direct thought i don't want this but how they feel when they physically experience the forced arousal etc. nausea, horror, betrayal, anger at their own body, etc.

the aftermath is very helpful here too. digging into the trauma, the fallout. the emotional and psychological reality of what they've been through helps direct the intention, too.
