Faith in Humanity
I get on this site and I see some of the shittiest posts. And then I see others that make me remember that humanity isn’t totally fucked yet.
It’s time for me to post. Because not all people are shitty.
At Christmas time, my boyfriend and I were doing our shopping for Christmas, and I knew we were going to be close to twenty dollars short when I started adding up what we had in the cart. We didn’t have much, knowing that we had very little to spend. With both of our health issues, neither of us had been working.. I sent him to the car to fetch my emergency twenty dollar bill, money I had been saving for gas. When he came back, he was beyond upset. My money was gone.
I looked at the few things I had picked out for my family, and began to put some of them back. I couldn’t stop the tears from rolling down my face, both from embarrassment and anger that I couldn’t do even something small for them this year. I felt someone tap me on the shoulder, and I turned to see a man, compassion written all over his face.
He was kind of a punk, mid 20s with a beard and tattoos. He was doing his shopping as well, and when he looked and saw what little we had in our cart (I had gotten some things to bake cookies for my family, and a few five dollars movies from the bin) he asked how much I was short. My boyfriend replied for me, as I was a little emotional. He handed me a gift card he had for the store, and hugged me. This total and complete stranger paid for Christmas for my family. I hugged him back for quite a while, trying my best not to cry so much (it didn’t work). He said he understood how it could be so difficult in the early years of adulthood, and that he hoped that this blessed us. When we parted ways, he patted me on the shoulder and wished me a Merry Christmas.
Not a day has gone by that I haven’t thought of that man’s generosity, and cursed myself for not getting his name. Whoever you are, kind stranger, I hope you see this one day. And even if you don’t, I hope it inspires others. Kindness is everywhere; You just have to open your eyes and see it.
