Flanagan/Coltrane/Burrell/Sulieman - The Cats (1957)
Essential hard bop album. Nowadays youre likely to see this filed under "Coltrane" but I say screw that and file it under Tommy Flanagan. I dont know if he actually led but it sounds like it and frankly he deserves it.
Everybody does great here. Trumpet player Idrees Sulieman is probably the most unknown guy here and hes not, really. I know him mostly from appearances on Monk's Blue Notes. Anyway he sounds good here.
Idrees Sulieman and Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Monk Trio
Thelonious Monk – piano Gene Ramey – bass Art Blakey – drums with horn section Idrees Sulieman – trumpet; Danny West – alto sax; Billy Smith – tenor sax
The story goes that Monk said about this tune, ‘I swing more playing one note than some other MFs do using the whole damn keyboard.’ Some say that he had a particular MF in mind, a pianist who famously opined that Monk’s improvisation abilities were ‘limited.’ Say some, that MF once tried swinging on this song using ‘the whole damn keyboard’ which kind of ruined it…or so goes the story.
