Ray should’ve talked to Janosz again...
Looking back at this page where Janosz painted Ray and recalled his memory of him from the 2nd film, I can’t help but think that they should’ve gotten the chance to meet one last time in this particular story arc.
Describing the comfort of being embraced after all the darkness finally left him. Which, for a character as lonely as Janosz, would likely mean a great deal. We all know Ray as being the sweetest Ghostbuster, so it’s not far fetched to think that someone like Janosz could see him as this hopeful symbol.
(Plus we see that he does plenty other paintings while in Parkview, and this is the doctor’s first reaction to seeing his kind of work from him. So, he doesn’t do this often as some kind of obsessive vice. This was a conscious idea for a piece that came from a place of genuine happiness.)
It was interesting to hear this from Janosz’s perspective, as I’ve often wandered just how warped his senses where during Vigo’s possession. After being covered in the mood slime, he couldn’t even remember how he got there. Indicating he wasn’t in control of a lot of his actions.
Take a look at this closing panel showing Idulnas now having possessed Janosz. You can see various canvases and paintings, that he no doubt worked really hard on, all destroyed and scattered across his cell. Looking carefully, you can see what reminds of his painting of Ray.
I like the way this has multiple layers to it. Showing Idulnas’s eagerness for revenge - since Ray is the Ghostbuster he’d gone after (Due to him summoning the Stay Puft form of Gozer) and was foiled by previously in this series first story. But it also works for Janosz, representing a complete loss of hope and progress for him.
I wish we could've gotten one scene where the two of them see each other again and speak to each. Janosz would recognise him, and maybe that could show a first positive sign of him getting some grip back on reality when his mind get’s broken.
“...Embraced me when the darkness, it vanished.”
But, apart from Kylie mentioning just how clearly messed-up he is, none of the other Ghostbusters even acknowledge him. He’s just left there on the bed after that traumatic event. Say for one dismissive comment by Peter, pretty much saying,
“Well he’s always been crazy, so who cares?”
(A small thing worth mentioning is Janosz’s body language in that last panel. The way it’s drawn, he could either be sitting as he was before, now with his head sunken down, and his ear is in the light. Or he could have a hand to his face, indicating him breaking down. Either way it’s rather sad.)
I wish Ray could've at least tried to speak to Janosz, assess the scene and figure out for himself what Janosz had done to save everyone lives despite what he was forced into. This would be confirmed by Kylie, having just witnessed it. Then Winston could fill-in the blanks by mentioning Janosz’s nephew and sister. We meet his nephew, Alan, long before we meet Janosz. Then the whole story of how and why this happened could come together. Perhaps redeeming him slightly in the Ghostbusters eyes, sans Peter of course. Ray could talk to Janosz and then he could have that little glimmer of hope again.
It would’ve been a nice book-end to everything set-up since the end of the 2nd film, the start of this particular story arc and a fitting end to Janosz’s character arc. Have it mean more than just a cute gag. Not to mention provide some closure for the possibility of Janosz’s recovery after his sacrifice and suffering.
But, sadly, we’re left with the much more bitter and tragic end for Janosz’s character with no sign of things getting better again, despite everything he’s been through. Still in an asylum, still alone.
