The bittersweet consequence of YouTube’s incredible growth is that so many stories will be lost underneath all of the layers of new paint. This is why I wanted to tell the story of how, ten years ago, a small team of web developers conspired to kill IE6 from inside YouTube and got away with it.

For this week’s illustration experiment I spent quite some time doodling in ink, and a lot of time cleaning up and playing with the ink doodles in illustrator before decking to lay them over some appropriately spooky colours.
While I’m not entirely proud of the result I had a lot of fun exploring, and I would definitely like to play with and practice these hybrid illustration techniques in the future.
The year was 2009, and Internet Explorer 6 remained a plague on the web. Already nearly a decade old, it was hopelessly outdated, riddled with bugs and security holes, and long since superseded. Yet with nearly 20% market share, web developers everywhere were still under pressure to support its infuriating quirks. The tide finally turned when, out of the blue, YouTube added a banner announcing it would soon be dropping support for the obsolete browser.
