I just realized, every time Cas thought Dean was dead or Cas died (expect for 15X18), he never told Dean he loved him. With this in mind, I wonder if, during the times where he really thought Dean was dead, Cas carried some regret bc he either couldn't say a proper goodbye and/or be honest about his feelings. Ik he pushes down his feelings bc he believes Dean doesn't love him back, but I really believe that part of him who longs for Dean's heart has had quite a few thoughts that were untold in the show.
