His body hit the leaf-littered forest floor with a loud thud. Victory whined out behind the tied gag around his mouth, feeling pain bloom in his ribs. One of his eyes were already swollen shut and his wrists were rubbed raw from the tight ropes around them. Brows shoving forward, he tried to glance up and get a good look at the two men on horseback that dropped him there. His gaze was blurry.

"Sit tight, kid." One said, a smile in his voice. "Once your dad gives us what we want, we'll let you go." The other man seemed to look over and hum in confusion. "I thought you said we were gonna kill him?" Hissing, the first shoved at the other. "I said potentially we might! But if things go to plan, we won't have to!"

Vi squeezed his eyes shut while locks of his hair escaped his braid to fall across his face. God, he wished they'd just do it now. As much as this was terrifying, there was a quiet relief in knowing he might never have to go back home. His father was itching to get him to take over his lordship, and he wanted absolutely none of it. Sure, he loved being bossy as much as the next person, but he was never meant to rule over anyone else. Death almost sounded merciful.

"We'll be back to check on you in the morning." The first said. The second hummed again and smirked a little, "Don't get eaten, okay? There's stories of monsters out in these woods." Rolling his eyes, the first man clicked his tongue and pushed his horse into a walk. "A monster better not eat my meal ticket." He said, "You better knock on wood, 'cause if that happens, you'll be dead meat next." The second's smile spread and followed along behind, his horse moving almost lazily. "Don't threaten me with a good time."

Vi didn't bother opening his eyes until he could no longer hear them. Morning was hours away, and the ground was already starting to grow cold. There were no monsters out here, but the elements were more than dangerous. Maybe, if he was lucky enough, he'd freeze.
