Pulling the trigger was easy; it’s everything before that haunts her. 

Her brother's eyes, first fearful, then defiant, then empty as she watched the light fade out of them. Moments before she buried two bullets in his chest, she saw him as the kind boy she once knew, a boy who held her hand when she was scared, who played imaginary games in the treehouse, and taught her chess. Now he’s a cruel man who mocks her even on the brink of death.

"At least I lived without ever being a fool."

Lena wanted to believe that she was different from Lillian and Lex. Now she knows the same evil lives inside her, a howling, monstrous thing freed from its chains. The seal on her morality, never more than a flimsy veil, is broken and every suppressed urge comes so effortlessly now. It’s a white hot rage that consumes her, crawling up her throat until she tastes hot iron on her tongue. She was never anything more than this—a wounded animal waiting for the right moment to lash out, to bare its teeth, starving for that first taste of blood.

Lena watches the day stretch long and thin across the sky from her window, imagining all the ways she could make Kara feel the way she’s feeling now, like a shell of a person. The horizon is on fire, the day gasping its final breaths, its color slowly draining, and with its final exhale, Lena is plunged into complete darkness.
