Fear comes from the devil – Satan – the lord of lies, the king of confusion, the ruler of rebellion, the duke of doubt, the prince of powerlessness, the emperor of evil, and the master of mediocrity. Then suddenly, the umbrella can’t hold back the flood anymore, and I realize, as the tears fall that I cannot do it on my own. I need the living, relevant and powerful Word of God. God’s Word is not meant as just an outline or aid for whatever book I am writing. It is an outline and aid for life. It is literally the Words of God breathed into hands and bled onto paper. It convicts. It corrects. It comforts. It calms. It calls us and commands us. It catches us and carries us. It centers us and counsels us. It celebrates us and cures us. It challenges us and changes us, and it celebrates us. When we go to God (in prayer AND Bible study) with our fears, He will calm them. He will take us in His arms and say, “Don’t you know that I love you for who you are. I made you with all of your flaws, and I have a plan for you. I don’t use you in spite of what you have done or been through, but because of those things. I use you – an imperfect, flawed and broken vessel – to let my light shine through you. I use you to set a spark and fan the flame of the gospel until it spreads like wildfire in the wilderness. I want to use you because I created you and I love you more than you can ever imagine. I want to do exceedingly abundantly more than you could ever ask or even think. So be strong and courageous, because I am always with you!" The Umbrella of Fear and Doubt “All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]; so that the man of God may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (AMP) I have been wandering in the desert now for a few months, parched, dying of thirst and praying for rain. I have walked around with an umbrella of fear and doubt over my head, completely oblivious to the rain that God has graciously poured out on me. We began studying Max Lucado’s “Anxious for Nothing” in my Wednesday night Bible study group. The key passage is Philippians 4:6-8 “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (drip drip) Do not be anxious about anything,” (drip drip) “in every situation, by prayer and petition, with THANKSGIVING, present your requests to God” (sprinkle sprinkle) “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (sprinkle sprinkle) “finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things. #ifgathering2018 is over and the dam finally broke. I cried tears of joy, thankfulness and conviction. I am going to persevere by trusting God, saying yes to the small things and being intentional and intimate with God.
