Withered Shrub or Green Tree Jeremiah 17:5-8: Thus says the Lord, “Cursed is the man who trusts in and relies on mankind, Making [weak, faulty human] flesh his strength, And whose mind and heart turn away from the Lord. “For he will be like a shrub in the [parched] desert; And shall not see prosperity when it comes, But shall live in the rocky places of the wilderness, In an uninhabited salt land. “Blessed [with spiritual security] is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord And whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord. “For he will be [nourished] like a tree planted by the waters, That spreads out its roots by the river; And will not fear the heat when it comes; But its leaves will be green and moist. And it will not be anxious and concerned in a year of drought Nor stop bearing fruit. This passage cautions us not to misplace our confidence. Putting our trust in anyone but God leads to disappointment, brokenness, and frustration. Trusting in ourselves or others shows our unbelief in our living God. Sometimes when our trust is misplaced, we don’t even see when God works. When we don’t trust God, we are like a pathetic, withered shrub. We are dried up and we don’t bear fruit. We should commit to and place our confidence in the all-sufficient Savior. By making the Lord our hope, we gain power, strength, and comfort. Trusting in God also points others to Him by giving Him the glory. When we trust God, we are a lush, green tree that is full of fruit. We bear the fruits of holiness, good works, grace, and strength. We are like a tree planted by water. The more our roots soak up the Word of God and His presence, the more fruit we bear.
