Heya!! Just found out about your ne zha fic where he's the one that becomes the fourth ring AND I'M INVESTED!!
*clear throat* anyway if it okay to ask, what are the source you're using to write ne zha? And any tips on writing fight scne please? Also how did you describe appearance so it didn't sounds boring?
Sorry for the bombarding you with question! I just had to ask! ^^
Also any tips to improve writing? (Because well I'm still a beginner with english being my second language ^^")
Also anyway have a nice day!! Or night!! And keep up the good work!! Take your time to answer this anyway!! ^^
IM SO GLAD YOURE INTERESTED!! Ill do my best to answer but honestly 90% of what i do is me winging shit LMAO
1) The best advice i can give is "start from wikipedia". It gets a bad rep bc "anyone can edit it" but honestly the people who run it are so rigorous about citing sources that even if you dont trust wikipedia itself, you can reverse engineer finding where the info comes from originally. The main thing I refer to for Ne Zha (the god from the actual mythology)'s origins is the Investiture Of The Gods / Fengshen Yanyi (封神演義). Obviously, I'm writing about Nezha (the lego character) so there are some pretty big differences in personality, accuracy and other things that would spoil later plans if i shared, but its a very good starting place. It's pretty easy to find English translations online, free/pirated PDF sites are your best friend basically. obviously theres also the Journey to The West, but Ne Zha plays a pretty minor role in that all things considered and its an EXTREMELY long book, so summaries are handy for that (i personally really like Overly Sarcastic Production's series on it, tho it is still ongoing)
2) Fight scenes are a BITCH to write. If you're too vague, people can't tell what's going on. If you're too specific and scientific, people Still cant tell what's going on and have to google things every five seconds. Either way there's too much guessing. The beautiful thing about IFMLGU is that almost all of the fight scenes I've had to write, I can just base off of LMK's. Chapter two's fight between Nezha and Wukong in the pagoda is just me describing what I see in the official animation. So yeah. Even if what youre writing cant directly be 'ripped off' from the source material, look up fight choreography and describe what you like from those videos. I also suggest keeping the fights relegated to what's important. I personally always skim over fight scenes/read them very quickly in fanfics and actual books because i find combat very boring to read. So, in IFMLGU, i dont describe every single fight that's implied to happen in full detail. Wukong's fight with LBD isn't shown at all, Mind Controlled! Wukong and Ao Lie are heavily implied to have fought when MK and Mei run away from LBD to find Nezha and Red Son, but adding the actual fight in would be clunky and unnecessary, so it's just the characters' words and Ao Lie's injuries in the next chapter (gasp. Spoiler) that show that it happened
3) When it comes to describing appearances, I try very very hard to not just give a huge paragraph of text describing what people look like. Sometimes, there are exceptions (i.e Red Som going "holy SHIT you look NOTHING like you did five seconds ago" when Nezha puts his glamours back up) but that's only to emphasise a severe change in appearance. Ao Lie, for example, has a couple of minor changes from his canon design, like his scars and his skin being a darker colour, but those things arent listed along with every other detail about him. They're put into the story; Nezha is comparing him to someone he used to know and is reminded of so it makes SENSE to list some of his features. As well as that, people don't tend to look at themselves in the mirror and list their features to themselves in their head. An exception, again, is when theyre changing those features. When Nezha applies his glamours for the first time, he mentions the things he's changing with minimal detail, and then those things are elaborated on later when Red Son is realising them for the first time. In a non-magic setting that'd be something like a haircut or an outfit change, most likely. The thing you really have to remember for fanfiction specifically is that unless there is a major change to the character's design, 99.99% of people already Know what these characters look like. If they don't know Mei has black hair, or Sandy is blue, then they probably will not be on your fic. Again, unless it is a character's first time seeing them, you probably dont need to describe them in crazy detail. If you have the ability to draw, or commission an artist, it can be SUPER helpful to have a visual reference for them, because i have definitely fallen into the trap of over describing a character just because i want to remember what they look like. If you cant draw or commission, free things like picrew and other doll makers, or Gacha Life are also really good options. Anything except ai images, really, is good.
4) Read!! Im being so genuinely for real, just read. Books, other fics, ANYTHING. So much of my new way of writing is based on what other people do. Text roleplay is also really good, because you're actually talking to another persok and can remember how conversations work better. Reading your work out loud is good to catch typos, grammar problems and janky or weird sounding sentences. And, most importantly, keep writing. Even if it's barely 500 words, or barely 100. Even if its full of typos and grammatical errors, even if it gets 2 kudos total, even if you never post it and it just sits in your drafts, KEEP WRITING.
I HOPE SOME OF THIS WAS HELPFUL, HAVE A GOOD DAY!!!!
getting back into percy jackson is doing terrible horrible things to my IFMLGU progress
