it was your favorite time of the year. you had on your favorite outfit. you felt good! every moment you had since waking up this morning was bliss. there had to be something in the air giving you all the right buffs and allowing the world to care for you with this level of gentleness.
you were slow to get out of bed this morning but not late to the only time agreement you had. your project director had told you how proud he was of your work but how desperately he wanted you to take on more collaborative assignments. work with others, show them what you have, ask questions, be engaged.
“yeah. i think its a great idea.” you forced a smile through your eyes and clicked your pen closed while stacking your books after checking your watch. when you look up everyone is looking at you. you look at his project director, standing on the other side of the projected slide board. he checks his watch and clears his throat. he is giving you a look. an unmoving look. you stare and continue stacking then stop, putting both of your hands in the table and taking a deep breath.
“while orange, pink, and yellow are a fun color scheme, i think for these slides, the colors are washing each other out, fighting even. you’re advertising… medicine? it’s hard to focus. i thought i was watching the first game show on color tv. if its medicine, try something more sleek. any bold color next to white does medicine wonders. and if it’s not medicine, clear that up too. we all sat in here with you for an hour and a half while you talked about logistics and potency and benefits but never took 5 seconds to actually tell us about the product. what is it? what does it actually do? what am i using it for? this needed to be more practical, not just for show.”
“and if anyone needs anything else from me, i’ll be in my office.”
you grabbed your stuff while the swarm behind you had only just collected their things. dina worked in the office across from you. she was a fiery finance analyst and one of the only people at this job worth staying for. the both of you have had some serious heart to hearts with one another. you both had your first impressions of the other.
you thought she was crazy. she thought you were a bitch. it took some alone time together for you both to realize you aren’t too different from one another.
“i’m glad you said something. because all of my notes are just me asking where we’re gonna get the money for all this. did you actually like the idea?” you both pause and look at each other. and then keep walking.
“i couldn’t even stand the tie he was wearing.”
“i think i saw it at burlington once.”
“it’s the only one of three that he owns.” you start to chuckle.
“so the bar is doing $5 drinks tonight.” you say meekly. she gives you a look while flipping through her notes from the meeting. she smacks her lips.
“i can’t tonight. me and james are doing our anniversary dinner at home this year.”
“that’s ok. better use of this.” you escape for 5 seconds into your office and emerge again with dinas favorite bottle of wine.
“you got this for us!?” she nearly screams but is able to contain your excitement.
“well i actually got it for us. but its your anniversary so go wild.” you’re brushing it off, treating it like it’s nothing. then you hand the bottle out to her.
“thank you.” she looks in your eyes with shine then pulls you into a hug that lasts. the rhythms of your heart beats sync right as she pulls away. her lips fix for two seconds to say something before miles, the junior it, comes around the corner.
“dina, you put a work order in for your computer?” he rushes, pushing his glasses back up on his nose. he ignores you. you look at dina and she gives you apologetic eyes. you smile kindly and escape back into your office again, this time locking the door as a strong inducator that you won’t be out again soon. the offices are pretty sound proof but the door is glass. miles and dina push into her office and you subtly watch the affair as dina attempts to secretly put the wine bottle away that miles had assuredly seen already. you watch the banter go back and forth for a while having no idea how to read lips and limited body language to tend to this visual eavesdropping. you watch as miles faces rushes with color and he stops looking at dina. her hotheadedness looked to be coming out as her expression and demeanor changed. miles was crouched under her desk as dina squated slowly to meet him. she whispered something in his ear that made him stop fiddling with the wires entirely. she stood up and looked down at him with an accomplished smile. you couldn’t see his face from this angle but he was sitting in the floor with his shoulders slumped, seemingly breathing heavy. she says something to him again, this time while standing. and in tandem, the both of their heads snap to you. you immediately look away and try to make yourself look busy but your computer screen is off. all you have in front of you are some closed notebooks. you hadn’t even turned the lights on. all you did was stare. and while your day was great, and this wasn’t horrible. it was odd. and it made you feel ashamed. like you saw something you werent supposed to. but there was no way you felt worse than miles. whatever dina told him ruined him. it wasn’t shock or disbelief. something more wrecking. and was he shaking or about to cry or something? why did he look like that?
