In Kota Tua (Old Town) area of Jakarta, you will find this beautiful old building, called Gedung Cipta Niaga. It was named Internationale Credit en Handelsvereeniging Rotterdam (International Credit and Trade Association) Building after the dutch company with the same name. Located on the east bank of Kali Besar (Grote Rivier/Grand River), it was built in 1912 by Ed. Cuypers en Hulswit Architect Bureau. - Nicknamed Rotterdam Internatio, the building was a center for business activity that focused on banking, agriculture and shipping, run by dutch colonialist. After the independence of Indonesia, the building was nationalized into Cipta Niaga company. Had a great time with my cousin @michelbeeckman at the Fatahillah Square (Indonesian: Taman Fatahilah), at the Old Town area, Jakarta. - Featured in the picture at the background is The Jakarta History Museum (Indonesian: Museum Sejarah Jakarta), also known as Fatahillah Museum or Batavia Museum. The building was built in 1710 as the Stadhuis (city hall) of Batavia. The building was modeled after the Palais op de Dam (or the Royal Place) in Amsterdam. Jakarta History Museum opened in 1974 and displays objects from the prehistory period of the city region, the founding of Jayakarta in 1527, and the Dutch colonization period from the 16th century until Indonesia’s Independence in 1945. - The square itself was first recorded in c.1627 as Nieuwe Markt (Dutch "New Marketplace"). At that time the mouth of Kali Besar (named then as Groote Rivier, "Big River") meandered toward the west-side of the square, giving the square a riverfront quality. The square was occupied by shophouses. The name was changed into Stadhuisplein following the completion of the city hall. Kali Besar (de Groote Rivier) refers to the channel connecting Sunda Kelapa in the north to the south part in old town of Jakarta. Literally meaning Grand River, this river parallel to Ciliwung River in their east disemboguing at the heart of the old city of Jakarta. Now the river became a tourist attraction at the Old Town area of Jakarta. - The river’s role is similar with Amstel River in Amsterdam, as the river was cut the Old Town of Batavia (Jakarta) in the middle, and became the center of economy and trading of VOC where there were buildings for the manufacture and repair of ships as well as for the laborers or slaves to work. Kali Besar was seen as an elite residential area in the early 18th century and later transformed to become the central area of offices for international trading. One example is The Red Store building. - There used to be various buildings along the Kali Besar in the VOC era, such as warehouses, private settlements, churches and markets. Many of the buildings located along Kali Besar Barat street and Kali Besar Timur street are in European architecture and are built in the 19th century, including old buildings, offices and warehouses.
