Joonas Dirckse a Woman aboard a Dutch East Indiaman
We know of cases of women who pretended to be men in order to serve in the army or navy. Cornelia Gerlach in her article "Sie wollten Segeln als Matros" and Rudolf Dekker and Lotte van de Pol, Vrouwen in mannenkleren. De geschiedenis van een tegendraadse traditie. Europa 1500–1800 (Amsterdam 1989) - "The Tradition of Female Transvestism in Early Modern Europe" by Rudolf M. Dekker and Lotte C. van de Pol (MacMillan Press, 1989) have come across an interesting case, that took place on a VOC ship in the 17th century.
That of Joonas Dirckse, which can be found in a journal by a certain Nicolaas Brugmann dated 31 March 1696. ‘Fine weather,’ he noted that morning – it was a Sunday, by the way – noting the position of his ship on its way to Batavia, and then wrote: "On Thursday, the ship's crew played a few shipboard games and while playing discovered a woman dressed in men's clothing who had enlisted with the East India Company as a sailor for ten guilders under the name Joonas Dirckse, a native of Gothenburg."
A factual entry. Nothing more. As if it were perfectly normal for a woman to sneak on board. But what became of Joonas and who was hiding behind this identity is not known. Perhaps she was let off the ship in Batavia, or perhaps she was left completely unmolested. But these are only assumptions. However, this shows that there were significantly more women in service and that they were possibly simply ignored, even if their presence was known.

I've been thinking that the absolutely batshit story of The Batavia would make for a great season of The Terror. Another maritime incident, mutiny, murder...it has it all. It wouldn't even have to be supernatural, I feel like the suspense and potential gore would make it scary enough
and in a perfect world they'd cast Jared Harris and Tobias Menzies bc they're perfect to me and i want to be delusional
also if you havent read the story of The Batavia its amazing and insane and horrifying
BATAVIA -> Dutch East indies => now INDONESIA
