Please enjoy “Les Contes des Fées” (#fairytales ) by #ignatiussancho (1729-1780). Sancho was born on a slave ship in the Atlantic Ocean enroute to the Spanish colony of New Granada (modern day Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela). When he was two years old, he was brought to England as an enslaved person. During his time in England, he learned to read and write and developed an interest in literature, poetry and music. Upon the death of his enslaver, he was freed and given an annuity. With this money, he opened a grocery shop while writing and publishing essays, plays, music, books, and becoming involved in the British abolitionist movement. Sancho is the first black person known to have voted in a British election, the first to have his music published, and the first black person known to have a obituary in a newspaper.
