Can I mention the brilliance the RF Kuang did with Robin Swift’s name? No, not “Robin Swift,” but his original one. We’ll never know what his original name was. I was waiting, all 500+ pages, and on the last one with Robin’s POV, we get nothing.
But he gets his name back. After all his suffering, I’m inclined to believe that he deserves it.

realistically he's fairly average lol I always want to make him look more on the quietly scholarly side? Originally Jurchens (who the Manchu came from) were a semi-nomadic semi-settled cluster of culture that greatly valued hunters and had much of the same cultural points as many Mongolic and some Turkic groups, wrestling, shamanism, eagle hunting/falconry, extensive horseback riding and archery mastery, throat singing, respect for and relation to nature and animals, etc. however many of the Manchu emperors had a great love for classical Chinese paintings and literature, Qianlong himself was known for liking paintings a little too much and having a fascination with western technology and automation, even keeping a collection of clocks and such. Plus, the more Manchu ruled, the less active and sharp they became, losing much of their hunter/warrior and traditional culture as they integrated. I imagine him sort of being originally one of the many Jurchen tribes who ended up 'absorbing' his siblings or something, so I can make him seem more quiet and scholarly but make the Jurchen tribes a little fiercer and sharper seeming!

I'm writing a oneshot with S Korea and I want to use his human name. I have no knowledge of Korean and don't know how Korean names work, I thought I'd ask you: how would I write Im-Yong Soo? Is it accurate? (Hima has given us incorrect names before) I invite you to give some of you're own thoughts/headcanons on what it looks like in Korean. (For future reference, I'd love to hear your thoughts on a nyo! name too) If u/someone already wrote on this, feel free to link to a past post. Thank you!

So Korean names are made of a surname (Im) and a two syllable given name (Yong Soo or Yong-soo). In western naming order his name would be written as Yong-soo Im.
I think Hima did a pretty good job with Korea’s name actually! The only thing that’s kind of weird about it is the choice to use “Im” (sort of uncommon) compared to “Kim” (EXTREMELY common). Yong-soo and Im are both real names though.
The Chinese characters as they are used in Korean are called Hanja, and the specific Hanja used to write the name determines the name’s meaning. Conveniently, Hima used kanji (adapted Chinese characters used in Japanese) to write Korea’s name, so we know exactly which characters are used for Korea’s name!
임 - 任 - Im
“to carry or bear a burden; to take on a duty or responsibility.”
용 - 勇 - Yong
“brave and courageous.”
수 - 洙 - Soo
"River.” I like to think it’s a reference to South Korea’s rapid rise from a third world country to a booming economy, known as “the miracle on the Han River.” But I doubt Hima made it that deep tbh.
There’s also a thing in Korean called “generational” names where family members of the same generation sometimes share a syllable in their given name. For instance, you might have a pair of siblings named Jin-tae and Jin-seok, or maybe Ha-rim and Soo-rim. But that practice has also declined and it’s normal to see family members who do not share a syllable. I don’t use a generational name for my Koreas but it could be something to consider if you wanted to make Korea’s nyo his sister or something.
My NK’s name is Sang-kyu, and the hanja I used:
상 - 常 - Sang
“eternal, forever, unchanging, everlasting.”
규 - 巋 - Kyu
“grand, secure, lasting.”
I haven’t found a name I like for nyo Korea, but here’s a big list of Korean names if you just want to look for one you like?

Babel: An Arcane History Headcanon about Robin and Griffin
I’m not mixed race, but I’m friends with many people who are (stick with me here, but also if I step out of line, pls tell me). My friends have brought up the fact that being mixed race has them being “ambiguous,” ethnicity-wise. This manifests with a variety of outcomes, like being white passing, or being mistaken for another ethnicity entirely.
Even among siblings with the same parents, many mixed-race kids do not look like each other.
Sure, while reading Babel, it was confirmed among all of Lovell’s colleagues that Robin looks like Griffin. At first, it was implied that their likeness was because of their foreignness: their Chinese heritage. Perhaps, in nineteenth century England, this makes sense. Nearly everyone else is white, so their Asian heritage would shine through. They probably both have dark hair, brown “Asian” eyes (as an Asian person I despise this trait which has been stigmatized to shit. But especially since they’re mixed, might not even be an obvious feature!!!) However, Griffin brings up that they are half siblings, drawn together by their white father. I think to some extent, they both look like their father, and that’s what makes people notice.
Look: Griffin’s mother is from southern China, so from her, he might have a stature of someone who was relatively shorter and tanner. (I would know, my roots lie there). Meanwhile, even though Robin grew up in Canton/Guangdong, his family comes from northern China, so he would probably be taller and paler. (Catch me standing next to my tall 东北 friends, and you’ll know what I’m talking about). Like seriously, there is a large notable difference between their mothers.
So I imagine people might catch their East Asian heritage, but more so the curve of a soft hooked nose (Griffin especially gave me this image because of the likeness to the griffin creature). More so the gruff stature of this professor, the paleness of their skin. And of course, it manifests in other ways too, such as brute force study methods that Lovell grilled into both of them during their childhoods. That’s less nature and more nurture though.
