RANT ABOUT DEAF PEOPLE AND HOW HEARING PEOPLE TREAT US

collectively can we all stop calling deaf people with "good" written/spoken languages smart.

yes, i acknowledge i have good english but that doesnt make me smart that just makes me lucky that someone actually fought for my education

you calling deaf people with basically average language skills smart is completely ignoring the rest of the community who have never had someone fight for them, and in my opinion its a little offensive, because i know for a fact if YOU a hearing person had a deaf children, you'd do NOTHING to give them education, you'd just give up and say "well i cant do anything"

YES. YES YOU CAN. YOU CAN FIGHT FOR OUR EDUCATION.

thanks to YOUR unwillingness to fight for us, our average readng level is in 4th grade. thanks to your unwillingness to fight for us, our levels of lonliness and worser mental health is higher than average. thanks to your unwillingness to fight for us, we have no language, no community.

i've seen it in all 16 years of being here, of students struggling to be able to communicate with hearing peers, of seeing deaf adults who are/were my teachers have struggle writing with correct grammar, of seeing my hearing teachers and peers saying my english is beautiful whilst im struggling in basic conversations because i can't hear them.

you cant pick and choose, we are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, we will struggle to understand YOU unless you accommodate us. unless you educate us.

I've seen parents refuse to teach their children sign language, so now they're behind with communicating with us. now they're being shunned by the others in this community because their parents just couldn't be bothered.

POC have it worse, i havent seen it, but racism still exists, so i know for a fact it likely is worse. i can't exactly talk on it because i am white, so if there is a POC Deaf user here, please feel free to add to it, in fact PLEASE add to this conversation.

multiple times over the years, I've had people comment on how I dont have an "accent" and that its so easy to talk to me. I've had hearing people ask me how to say bad words. and to be frank im so over it.

no, i will not teach you bad words in MY language, MY art. I consider it disrespectful.

yeah, i dont have an "accent," big fucking deal. I could make myself have an "accent" if i wanted to, its easier for me because that's so much less processing going on.

i've seen accounts of hearing people "teaching" ASL, and i find it so fucking bizarre. i had a hearing teacher last year who taught sign language. It's different if they are CODA, but if they aren't, why the fuck!!!! are you teaching!!!!!!! I don't care if you're an interpreter you've never had that culture your entire life!!!

Wholeheartedly, i believe CODAs/Deaf people should be the ones to teach sign language, because they've had that life, they've lived, breathed, seen and ate sign language, they've been in that culture.

Have I mentioned how much I HATE the fact there's parents out there who just get their child hearing aids/cochlear implants/BAHAs then never bother to learn sign language? It's so lazy.

Hearing devices are exhausting to wear, especially for me. Let's not forget that oftentimes theres cases where implants just don't work and it ends up causing more pain.

Hearing people make US accommodate them, all because they don't want to change their lifestyle.

So many cases of my Deaf peers having told me they feel lonely, cases where I've seen them with self harm scars because its just genuinely so isolating to be in this fucking world. ONE OF THEM ALMOST COMMITTED SUICIDE BECAUSE IT WAS SO ISOLATING. I ALMOST COMMITTED BECAUSE I FELT SO ALONE.

hearing adults don't do SHIT for their Deaf child(ren) because they just don't want to change!!!!

I blame hearing people for being so ignorant and for being so useless. I also blame them for making other Deaf people be ableist to themselves or others too!

I've heard cases where Deaf people consider people who became Deaf/HoH later in life as not Deaf, I've heard cased where Deaf/HoH people consider people with hearing devices as not Deaf.

I have a person in my life who keeps calling me Hard of Hearing just because I have cochlear implants. I am deaf, I will always label myself deaf.

OUR labelling is NOT YOURS to control.

I also DESPISE those who make themselves into the victim because their child(ren) are deaf, THAT ISNT OUR PROBLEM, GROW UP AND ACCMODATE US.

I am not saying ALL hearing people are like this, but so many of you damn sure are, and I will say I hate you with everything in my body. You piss me off and if you ever have children, I hope all of them turn out to be deaf.

By the way here's a list of how you can accmodate us!

1) Learn sign language!

2) write with us, DO NOT JUDGE IF OUR GRAMMAR IS WEIRD.

3, if the person is hard of hearing or has hearing devices) move to a quieter place and speak CLEARLY. do not yell, do not elongate your words, SPEAK CLEARLY.

4) if you're sending a audio message, transcript it! I DO NOT CARE IF THE DEAF PERSON CAN HEAR IT YOU TRANSCRIPT IT EVEN IF THEY DONT ASK. ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE TIME.

Thanks for coming to my rant. If you're a hearing person and you're like everything I've just listed, get better.

369 is an alcoholic and is very withdrawn from society, often going days without socializing, leaving his home, and posting. he...doesn't have any friends.
