There is a light at the end of this tunnel
Important Covid vaccine PSA!
In my real life world, I am a medical professional in a high-risk unit and in pediatric critical care transport (bringing babies from around my state and even outside my state to my hospital for more advanced care), and received my first covid vaccine the first week it was available in the US (Pfizer). Exactly three weeks later, I have received my second shot! So far, I still have no grown new body parts or anything exciting. (somewhat disappointing - I could really use another arm or two)
Even after you have been vaccinated, you must still wear a mask and do all the other covid safe things - no vaccine is 100% protective to begin with. We also don’t have enough data to know if it prevents serious disease alone or also prevents all infection - so you could still spread potentially! Additionally, we don’t know how long immunity will last. Finally, to achieve herd immunity, we will need 80+% of the population to be vaccinated before we realize the same benefits like we have with our other vaccines (that even if there is an outbreak, it helps limit the spread and risk).
The good news is that while there is a risk of allergic reaction, higher than other vaccines, allergic reactions can absolutely be reversed. They make you wait after you get your shot, to make sure you are not having an allergic reaction. I would much rather an allergic reaction that is reversible to the risks of getting covid.
My biggest side effect so far: Intense excitement about being fully vaccinated :)
Get the shot. Protect yourself, protect others.
If you have questions, I’m happy to answer to the best of my ability.
