Version 1:
"Xavier, look—our baby.” Lily said looking at Xavier, as she had the newborn boy cradled in her arms. “Xander.” She said softly, looking down at the baby and began to caress his soft cheek. But when Lily looked up to see Xavier’s face one more time, he was gone. He was like a cat, sneaky and quietly left the room. That was no surprise for Lily, though. She wasn’t expecting him to meet with his responsibilities, like he didn’t do it at the beginning of the pregnancy. It was stupid of her to keep her hopes up and thinking that maybe Xavier had changed, that the baby was going to bring out the Xavier that lies underneath all that negativity. Four years have passed now, Xander was already attending preschool and Lily was having mixed emotions—her baby was growing up but too fast. It was a Sunday night and she was cuddle up with her little boy in the couch, watching a Disney movie. “Hey, where you going?” Lily asked between giggles as Xander wiggled himself off the couch and brought a small box he had found under Lily’s bed. “Mommy, what’s in here?” He asked, putting the box in her lap and climbing back to the couch. Lily opened the box and inside were several letters and pictures; most of them were during her pregnant days. “Inside it has letters and pictures, from when I was pregnant with you!” Lily said, poking his tiny nose. Xander put his hand inside the box and began taking out everything one by one, furrowing at the letters since he couldn’t read them but was entertained with the pictures. Lily looked back up at the television, the particular dialogue caught her attention and she had forgotten what Xander was looking at in the box. “Who is this, mommy?” Xander asked. “Huh?” Lily said raising her eyebrows and looked down at the picture that he had taken out. It was a picture of Xavier. “W-Who…?” Lily stuttered, trying to find the words to explain to the boy. “Him mommy!” He said, waving the picture up in her face. “Xavier.” Lily said grabbing his hand and keeping it steady. It was been forever she had seen the face of Xavier and when she looked over at Xander, he had the same image as him. “Xavier?” The boy repeated in a confusion tone, turning the picture to stare at it more carefully. “H-He is your daddy, Xander.” Lily told him, looking down at him to see his expression. “I have a daddy?!” The boy asked in excitement, looking up at Lily. She couldn’t help but chuckle, “Of course!” She said nodding. Xander put the picture down on his lap, “Mommy,” he said in a more serious tone, in which caught her by surprise. “Does daddy love me?” Lily felt a knot on her throat, she wasn’t expecting that. “Y-Yes, baby—daddy loves you a lot.” She said, placing down a kiss on his forehead. “And why isn’t he here with us?” He asked, looking up at her. He was asking too much and this frighten her. “I don’t know—I ask myself the same thing.” Lily sighed, grabbing the control and turning the television off. “Time for bed, you have school tomorrow.” She said, grabbing the picture off his hand and the rest of the papers, putting it inside the box. “And no more looking through mommy’s things, got it?” She said, raising her eyebrows at him. Xander nodded and softly giggled, making her smile again. “Let’s get you ready for bed.” Lily stood up from the couch and picked up Xander, taking him to the room to get him settled for bed.Lily had a restless night, she wasn’t expecting for Xander to know about Xavier that soon in his life but she tried to keep the conversation positive, not wanting him to grow up to think that Xavier hated him or something. But it beginning of another week, Lily had her day off but she still had to wake up to get Xander ready for preschool. “Wakey, wakey!” She said, kneeling down to his small bed and began to tickle him. “Hi mommy!” He said between giggles, trying to push her hands away. “Time for school.” She said, pulling the covers away from him and getting him out of bed. They did their daily morning routine and now they were seated in the kitchen table having some delicious breakfast. “Be right back,” she said, getting up from the table and walking over to the room to get her bag. She took out her phone and was checking up her notification. She sighed seeing the voicemail and she figured they had probably called her for work. Walking back to the kitchen, she placed the phone in her hear to listen to the recording message meanwhile she stared at Xander as he was finishing up his waffles. Suddenly, the phone slipped out of her hand and a shock expression was planted in her face. “Mommy are you okay?” Xander asked, looking over at her. “I-I’m fine.” Lily said, shaking her head and picking up her phone. “Finish eating sweetie, we are almost leaving.” Lily looked down at her phone and even from far away distance from her ear, she can hear the voicemail being played over and over again. "I’m Coming Home." were the three words that made her body tense up. And it wasn’t necessarily the words, but the voice that deliver it. She couldn’t forget that voice, the voice that she had heard in different tones as well: pleasure, anger, annoyance, happiness, and disbelief. It was hard to think that he was going to return, that he was actually going to step back to their lives. “I’m ready!” Xander shouted, spooking her from her thoughts. Lily looked down at him and tried to pull off a smile. “Let’s go, I’ll grab your backpack.” She said, following him as he began to open the door and she grabbed his backpack from the hook. “Don’t move.” She said, as she turned to lock the door—"Four years ago, you ran away from your responsibilities. But that wasn’t what hurt the most—what hurt is that you were willing to leave a baby without his father. To not give him the love he needed and taught him the things a father should have done. He had to grow up seeing other boys and girls having both parents, meanwhile he suddenly ate his feelings and didn’t bother to even mention it. You missed his first steps, his first word, and his first day of preschool. And if you’re curious to now, his first word was daddy. Because I used to talk to him about you before he was able to completely understand what I am talking about.”—”Daddy!" Xander suddenly shouted excitedly pointing towards the street. Lily tried to process the word Xander had just shouted it. And she quickly turned around, looking down at Xander and then following where his finger was pointing at—In the sidewalk, Xavier was standing there.
Version 2:
It was a tough labor. Doctors have warned Lily that she had the possibility to die when she goes into labor. But she knew she had the strength to make it through, she wasn’t going to let her body to defeat her because she was determined to be there and watch her baby grow up. Lily was finally left alone with Xander in the room she was put in, it was silent but she loved it because she was able to hear the little one breath. A human figure appeared in the doorway of her room and Lily looked up, seeing Xavier staring at the small human in her arms in a shocking way. “This is Xander, our baby.” She said softly smiling, knowing that Xavier probably haven’t process the fact that he was a father. Xavier was quiet and Lily knew something wasn’t right with him in the moment, especially of how heavily he was breathing. “Xavier, are you okay?” Lily asked in a concerned tone in her voice. And in a second, Xavier rushed inside the room and pulled the baby away from her arms. He cradled him on his and looked over at Lily, “I’m sorry.” He said, biting down on his lip before he stormed out of the room. “XAVIER!” Lily yelled, pulling the covers away from her and trying to get out of the bed. She groaned at the pain that was in the bottom of her stomach, “XAVIER! BRING ME BACK MY BABY!” Lily shouted, as she fell down on her knees. A nurse came running in and began to pick her up. “Ma’am, where’s the baby?” The nurse asked in a serious tone. “He took it!” Lily said between sobs, “Xavier took my baby!” Lily took a grip on the nurse’s shoulder. “He took my baby!” Four years have passed, four years since the incident. Lily had put a report at the police station but after two years, they had given up. Not even the surveillance videos in the hospital was enough help to find Xavier. They told her it would have been pointless anyways, Xavier is the father after all and there wasn’t really much to blame him in something. Especially since they weren’t legally married. Ever since then, Lily has been a dead soul still living in the real world. She continued her work at being a waitress and tried to pull off a smile in her face. But every night, she would cry herself to sleep. It was still haunting her not knowing how Xander is, how he is growing up to be and especially how he looks like now. She lost almost all her friends, no one could bear to be with her and her negativity. She lost the meaning of fun, hope, and life. All she wanted was her baby back. The only photographs she had of him were the ultrasound pictures and still, that wasn’t enough for her.Lily was let go early on Wednesday afternoon, there was hardly any clients in the restaurant and it was pointless to have many waitresses working at the same time. She didn’t complain though, that day she just wanted to curl herself up in a ball and forget about the world. That day she decided to take the long route back home, which meant going through the park. She always regretted it once she was in it but she thought it would be good to let the breeze and smell of the trees hit her face and bring her back to reality. Though, she avoided looking towards the playground—it was hard to see all the kids running around and more specifically, watching them interact with their parents. Arriving to her house, she decided to sit in her doorsteps. The breeze was cool and perfect, it would be a shame to lock herself inside. Lily took out her phone from her pocket, she had felt earlier that it was vibrating but decided to ignore it. Turning it on, she realized she had a missed call and a voicemail followed by it. It was probably from work that they did needed her after all. Sighing, she unlocked the phone and went directly to listen to the voicemail. Although, a different voice from the one she was expecting came out from the recorded message. Lily’s breathing became heavily and there was tears swelling up in her eyes. "I’m Coming Home." were the only three words in the message and it was enough to get her to gain mixed emotions. It was Xavier’s voice and slightly in the background she swears she can hear a small giggle from a child. She thought it was most likely a sick joke from him or someone else. They knew where it was going to hurt her the most and decided to toy with it. Lily dropped her hand in her lap, looking down at the phone as the voicemail kept repeating itself again and again. She closed her eyes silently began to sob."You ripped four years of my life. You took away the person I was looking forward watching grow. You took away a piece of my heart the moment you pulled away the child from my arms and simply said ‘sorry’ for something you knew was going to torment me for the rest of my life. You didn’t let me watch him grow during those special moments of his life. I missed his first steps, first word, first laughter and first smile. You killed me without physically hurting me and even I wonder how I have managed to live through all these four years. Now you claim to come back and I wonder if guilt has eaten you up enough to realize what you did was morally wrong. You took our baby away from his mother—one of the most important people in his life."”Mommy!" The sound of a young boy shouted out of from the distance. Lily eyes opened up and her heart began to pound quicker. She looked up towards the sidewalk and saw a little boy jumping in it’s place from excitement. He had his grip on a finger and she followed the arm of the person whose finger was being hold on tight by the overly excited boy. Meeting up to the face, her breathing went away from a moment—It was Xavier and the little boy next to him was their son, Xander.
