How 15 feet changed my life, and other stories.
Today was jam packed full of super interesting and relatively mundane events. I woke up pretty early this morning for our first day of the "Stage." I said good-bye to Cha (sp?) the Chinese engineering student who had been living with us, and packed up my suitcases in preparation to move into her vacated abode. Ayesha and I took the bus which was quick and easy, albeit a bit crowded.
The morning consisted of a large meeting with IIEF students who last names began with A-L (plus all of us LCCF students) and then a test ("une test, pas une examen!") of our French level. The test was pretty short and a little intimidating. Due to the brevity of the test we were left with four hours for lunch. Now, I'm not sure if you have a good idea of how long four hours really is, but it is pretty long. A group of us ended up grabbing sandwiches and eating in a beautiful park. We walked along a little canal in the park and gawked at all of the french ducks, french lily pads, and french trees. We then left the natural beauty of the park to explore a near-by mall. The mall was uninteresting save two distinctly cool features. The first is an escalator that was really just a really sloped moving walkway, it sounds lame, but believe me, it is pretty neat. The second feature is several touch screen searchable mall directories. You could search for the restrooms, or H & M, or Orange and it would not only show you which floor it was on, but it traced out a little pathway with a red line. I was throughly impressed.
Today was the hottest day we have experienced in Strasbourg, so the walking around left us tired, but happy to sit in the shady classroom. Our afternoon class was an introduction to "University Life." Much of what was discussed we had gone over during our program orientation, but there is another test at the end of the Stage so I tried to stay focused as the classroom shot up in temperature. When class let out and we escaped into breathable air, Claire, Kelly, Brittany and I went in search of a Cafe. Unable to find one within an acceptable walking distance in the heat while a few of us sported blisters, we settled on munching on some pastries sitting by a playground. It was a great way to relax. I am notching how much green space there really is here. I love it!
For dinner tonight my host mom made a lamb-bean-zucchini, type thing, with mashed potatoes, but the best part were the speculoos flavored ice cream bars for desert. She cooks so well, and I don't want to be rude, but if this keeps going I might explode. Moving on.
When I got home tonight I moved into my new room. Fifteen feet from where I was living before I really feel like I am in a new house. I feel more cut off than before, (I have to walk through the shower room and a little hallway to get to my room.) The wi-fi also goes from fast, full connection, to slow, intermittent connection. Those 15 feet have changed a lot. I do think I have more privacy, more space, and I am much more comfortable now that I have finally unpacked my suitcases. I feel like I have finally arrived!
