Chongyun technically isn’t supposed to be in Liyue right now. The harbingers have all been called back to Snezhnaya, and Chongyun was supposed to go back with them. They chose to stay behind.

Chongyun also could have remained inside Northland Bank or stayed at Childe’s former residence, but instead, he’s wandering around, almost bored. There’s really not a whole lot to do anymore since Chongyun doesn’t talk to anyone much these days. Also, without orders from the other fatui, Chongyun’s kinda left feeling a little lost.

Which is why they’re not surprised to find themself at the bookstore. Chongyun’s even less surprised to see Xingqui there. For a second, Chongyun feels a flicker of excitement, before forcibly squashing it down. Instead, Chongyun just does their best to ignore his former best friend, keeping a neutral face on the whole time they’re browsing books to read.

Chongyun does offer a small, very curt, “hello, Xingqiu,” to not appear completely rude.

rubs my grubby little hands together, this guy’s emotions are gonna break him one day!! it’s mostly the overall theme of things starting to crumble that made me put it on his playlist, and whenever it plays, i know the actual meaning of the song is slightly different of course but i tend to think of it, like. near the time erosion really starts to become a problem? so the whole thing is him trying to come to terms with what’s happening / what’s going to happen after trying to keep it bottled up so he didn’t make it anyone else’s problem, and he’s kind of trying to come to terms with stuff now before it actually hits but it’s quite the struggle, and i could give a whole verse by verse analysis but it’s probably easier to Show just how the second pre-chorus and chorus fit that whole vibe,

“My wish for you is that you stay alive —.” Allowing harm to come to them would have only added disappointment to his grief, had he been a mere bystander during their downfall (even if said downfall only went as far as physical injury.) “That’s not the easiest request for you to comply with if I don’t offer my assistance when it’s needed. Wouldn’t you agree, comrade?”
