Typography Tuesday
This week we present an issue of Ijusi, a biannual experimental magazine published by Garth Walker at his Mister Walker Press, located in Durban, South Africa.
Initially published in 1995, right after South Africa’s first democratic elections following the end the Apartheid, the goal of Ijusi, according to its website, was to ask a single question: “What makes me South African, and what does that ‘look’ like?” Ijusi explores this idea and the discourse surrounding South African representation and identity in the graphic arts, namely photography, illustration, and of course, typography.
Pictured here is Ijusi #26. Published in 2011, this issue is the third in a series of type-specific themes, encouraging artists and designers to create typefaces, hand lettering, and the like, based on their own personal South African experience. This issue includes contributions by 40 designers. Some typefaces are more or less traditional, while others are highly experimental. Each one offers a unique perspective on South African culture and identity.
