The sword of the day is the iklwa.
Our first polearm*! Kind of. The iklwa wasn’t really used like a polearm, since the length of the weapon gave the wielder a reach comparable to a sword. This weapon originated with the Zulu people of South Africa, and its use was pioneered by Shaka Zulu. It’s a close-quarters fighting weapon, *not* meant for throwing, and it is traditionally used alongside a cowhide shield.
*polearms are eligible for sword of the day.
What are some examples of medieval African armor and how effective was it compared to European and Asian armours?
This is a far larger ask than you may realize. Africa is a large continent, with a tremendous diversity of cultures and a deep history. Additionally, it's far from my area of expertise. As such, I would recommend checking out the HAMAA Facebook group for more in depth info.
That being said, I can provide you with a few examples of the most famous African weapons, such as the Ethiopian shotel,
the Sudanese kaskara,
the Zulu iklwa,
and the variety of throwing knives used in Central Africa, which are known by various names.
All of these weapons are equally as effective as similar weapons used elsewhere in the world.
As far as armor goes, I know that maille in various forms has been utilized for a very long time, at least in northern Africa.
I would again encourage you to seek out members of HAMAA for more in depth information.

Shaka Zulu, the man who forged a feared empire out of a tiny tribe in southern Africa
Each continent has had its own significant and feared warriors. For Africa, one name to remember is that of Shaka, the great king and founder of the Zulu Empire in the early decades of the 19th century. Shaka was born and raised in the southeast of what is today South Africa, and during his short but turbulent and violent reign, he brought together hundreds of independent Nguni chiefdoms.
