My darling son Badeau,

I have sent this letter to several different locations, in the hopes that one of them will reach you.

Ilarii is found...but he is comatose.

A cleric sent us a letter from Surwich - she would not elaborate on how she came by our boy, but after taking him to a private hospital for initial medical treatment, she saw him moved to his house on the southern end of the continent - the only house she knew to be his - and found the information to contact us from there. Pa Torian and I are going to visit immediately, and if he is stable enough we will move him to Sweetbriar, where he belongs.

I will send you another letter when I know more. It is the middle of harvest, as you know, so the rest of us Sweetbriar will be here making up the work until your pa and I can return in a few days time. Please come visit us soon - we miss you.

Happy Birthday, Ilarii, my muse.

I’m sorry that it’s been so hard to write for you. I’m sorry that you’re stuck in so much pain and I don’t know the right way to get you out of it. I’m sorry that you’re tied to so much pain and grief for me.

I’ll be receptive to you as soon as I can. I wish I had a better present for you, this year, but I think you’ll like the dream I’ve given you well enough.

I hope it’s not too painful to come back to this when you wake from it.

He was standing at a street sign, the letters scintillating with arcane as they transitioned across the plaques and faded in a shimmer, only to appear again moments later. It was late evening; the lights of the avenue had changed in scheme to more passionate shades as nightlife carried on in the nearby venues. An argument barked and echoed in further up the hill, and seductive murmurs and laughter sounded from a nearby alley. He was inebriated, leaning against the signpost; he was so heavy.

Her fluid figure came around from the other side of the post, the night in her hair and laughter in her eyes.

“I am going to burn, being so close to you,” he whispered to her, drawing close and inhaling her aura.

“Perhaps you are the flame,” she replied. Her fingertips skipped feather-light over his sternum.

He brushed his mouth against hers, tenderly. She pressed her mouth to his with more surety, more promise. He melted into her, eager to pour as much as she thirsted for.

Pain replaced his pleasure, and his would-be lover dissipated.

BETRAYAL, she seethed, crippling him. You are MINE. She has abandoned you.

“Yes, Mistress. Please, forgive me,” he sobbed with twin agonies as the bonds around him also burned and constricted.

Never dream of her.

“Never, Mistress. Never again.”

You need guidance - come. We begin.

“Please, Mistress,” he whimpered. “Please-”

"Can I come to your rescue?"

Time had lost meaning to him now. He passed in and out of consciousness, coming awake at times when he was alone; other times being aware for the briefest of moments when he was clearly awake but under influence before the blur enveloped his mind again.

It wasn’t like the first time.

He was beginning to remember what had happened to him the previous winter and spring, during the time that his brother had told him he was gone. He was beginning to remember the days under a verdant canopy, the sunlight filtering in green and gold, filled with a lethargic contentedness like having drunk too much honey wine. He had memory of a maid with laughing eyes and a pretty mouth, aventurine-hued hair hanging in long sheets as she hovered over him. Eating sweet fruits and tangy greens during long, hot afternoons in the shade, the flavors strong and heady.

This time was different.

His skin was tender, his limbs sore from misuse. The bindings chafed at his joints, discouraging movement lest he reopen the scabs. He was being sustained with energy from her, but he longed to taste food and drink on his dry tongue. He wanted to swim in the ocean again, to run along the dry, red sand under the churning, bruised sky until the storms forced him to run back to the swampy hamlet he called home. He yearned for a delicate touch upon his skin without the flavor of possession.

In those rare moments when he found his mind his own, he pushed out with everything he had to reach someone. He had to keep trying - he had to - or it would mean he would be lost to everything he held dear. It would be the death of him.
