For many in The States, tradition is to observe Christmas Eve with "The Feast of the Seven Fishes," however, this is not Italian or Sicilian at all, it is an Italian-American tradition! When I asked my cousin Evelina in Bagheria, Sicily about the Seven Fishes, she didn’t know what I was talking about. Then I asked my friend Vittorio in Caserta, outside of Napoli, thinking maybe it was a Neapolitan tradition. He had never heard of this Christmas Eve practice either. Evelina explained that for “La Vigilia,” or Christmas Eve, their tradition is to have a dinner of sfincione (see previous post: https://experiencesicily.com/2016/12/23/keeping-it-simple-for-christmas-eve/), fried cardoon (the thistle of the artichoke plant, fried in a light batter), and perhaps some pasta, but not a large, rich meal. They reserve that for Christmas day. Meanwhile, if you do celebrate with the Feast of the Seven Fishes, I hope your food shopping was as much fun as my visit in Il Capo with the fish mongers! Palermo has three ancient markets: Vucciria, Ballarò, and Il Capo. Vucciria isn't what it was 40 years ago when Renato Guttuso painted it, which is perhaps a good thing. Now, during the day, it is smaller and host to a few food stands and many antiques and collectible vendors. At night, however, when it comes alive as an outdoor social center, it is THE place to be! Ballarò is expansive and somewhat of a maze of fruit, vegetables, and animal parts that haunt me in my sleep. It seems endless and boasts some of the best street food vendors you'll find in Sicily's capital. My favorite--can you tell from the photo?--is Il Capo. To me, it feels just right. It has a bit of everything: pop-up street food vendors, fresh cheeses and breads that arrive daily from the surrounding mountain villages, outstanding fruit, vegetable, and spice stands... and singing fish mongers!
