A 400 BCE statuette of the goddess Artemis riding a deer, found in Siracusa (now on display at Museo Orsi). Such votives were used to venerate deities throughout the ancient Greek Mediterranean. Artemis is the mistress of animals and wild, untamed things. The wilderness is where you'll feel her presence. She is the goddess of the hunt and hunters. She protects women in childbirth and maidens. She is a symbol of female independence, and shows us the value of solitude and wild, untamed places. The maiden Persephone holds a dove in this 575-550 BCE votive statuette found in a tomb in Siracusa, Sicily. As we move toward winter in the northern hemisphere, we prepare to send our innocent, pure protagonist of spring and summer to the Underworld or Hades, where she will take on her adult role as the sensual Queen of the Underworld and wife of Pluto or Hades. Crossing over to the other side is upon us. Persephone will lead us in the transformation of fall to winter, of dying to death. Palermo’s Salinas archeological museum hosts many treasures from antiquity. Many of the findings from Selinunte are housed here. Until Sunday, August 8, this magnificent "Head of Hades," also known as Barbablù will be in a special short exhibition at the @museosalinas Salinas Archaeological Museum in Palermo. The head, which is normally housed in the Museum at Aidone in Enna Province, was brought to Palermo briefly in order to promote a the Barbarlù Fest, a theater and music festival that will take place from August 19 to September 4 in Aidone at the Morgantina archaeological site. This piece is an extraordinary work of Greek ancient art from c. 350 BCE. Made of terracotta and still possessing blue coloring in the beard and red pigment in its individual curls of hair, it is thought to be the head of Plutone or Hades, the dark god of the underworld and partner of the goddess and queen of the underworld, Persephone. It is assumed that it was separated from the body of a full statue. In concert with the Goddess of Morgantina and the Acroliths of Demeter and Kore/Persephone, Barbalù is one of many outstanding works of art found in the extraordinary galleries at Aidone that host the findings from ancient Morgantina.
