But fine, fine, he’s awake. He pushes a hand through his hair and yawns, scowling lightly at Tim. “You’re buying me the most expensive latte on the menu for this.”

Rubs hands together gleefully.

Tim is the worst vampire ever. He just wasn’t ever able to get behind the whole hurting-people thing. Timmy pls let go of ur morals ur a creature of the nite now.

So naturally, Jason has to bail him out of a sticky situation regarding some bigger, badder vampires who are trying to push him around. Tim’s still a fledgling, he considers himself human, and these older vampires are assholes. Jason is human, but he’s self-styled as a vampire hunter, protecting the remaining humans who are preyed upon by vampires. He mistakes Tim (who is trying to negotiate his way out of the situation) for a human, and comes in with (metaphorical) guns blazing. It’s only after he’s reduced those around him to dust that he realizes his mistake.

But damn it, Tim looks up at him with baby blue eyes and starts yelling at him for the senseless violence and Jason feels his heart melt. He can’t leave this guy to fend for himself, the world will chew him up and spit him out!

And as much as Tim doesn’t like it, he doesn’t have any real reason not to go with Jason? And once Jason finds out that Tim doesn’t like feeding off the unwilling, Jay offers up his own blood. He’s got enough to spare, and this way Tim doesn’t have to hurt anyone.

Neither of them really count on just how intimate it is, though. Jason has rely on Tim not to drain him dry, and Tim has to count on Jason not to withhold sustenance from him. Their lives are in each other’s hands. And once you lay out that kind of vulnerability for someone else to see, and have it returned? Is it any wonder there might be a spark of something more?

“Ready, princess?” Jason grins under his helmet, hearing the calming buzz of an open comm line in his ear. Sure, it might be better for Tim if he’d physically been out here, but nobody can swing across roof tops and pick fights when they’ve got their arm broken in two places. Jason had offered to pick up Tim’s shift around the city, so now that he’s working double duty and Tim's control issues are climbing the walls, Jason is letting Red Robin ride shotgun in his ear while he patrols, like a miniature Oracle.

Sure, he doesn’t have cameras in his helmet, so Tim will have to keep visual on him via CCTV, but they have direct, private communications, and that’s what’s really important. “I dunno about you, but I think it’s gonna be a good night.”

Jason smiles softly. “I’m glad.” He’s been so terrible to Tim, he’s glad that Tim hasn’t held it against him. He’s doing his best to make up for everything awful he’s done to the younger man. “You know I wouldn’t let anything happen to you, princess.”

why does jason put up with tim's bullshit? he has every right to leave tim and let the titans take care of his stupid ass. jason deserves better.

“A lot of Tim’s bullshit is my fault, though. I’m the one who forced him into becoming Robin to begin with. And then when I came back, I did some pretty horrible things to him. There’s quite a few scars on his body that I’ve put there, and even a near-death experience or two that can be directly attributed to my actions. So I owe him.

“And even if I didn’t owe him, I’d still want to be here for him. Regardless of what I do and don’t deserve, (which, by the way, I don’t deserve anything), I want to help him as much as I can. It doesn’t matter why. I want what I want, and that’s damn good enough reason to act on it.”

“Princess, no. You don’t have to apologize for that.” Jason curls his arm around Tim’s waist and pulls him in against his chest. Sharing a bed has become a regular occurrence for both of them, Jason wants to keep an eye on Tim’s night terrors, and his own are lessened by being able to hear someone breathing safely next to him.

“We all get them. It’s part of the job, unfortunately. It’s nothing you have to feel ashamed for apologetic for.” He pets back Tim’s hair and risks pressing a kiss to the top of his head. “I’m always gonna be here for you so you’re not alone.”

“Damn, babybird, that sounds suspiciously like bullshit.” Jason gives his successor a deadpan look. “My expectations for you are to not actively try to die. Kinda fucking rude that you flaunt your death wish in my face, don’t you think?” Is he bitter? Hell yes, he’s bitter. Jason had that, he had the peace of death. And he has to consciously fight every day not to return there, regardless of how much he might want to. Tim? Tim doesn’t even have to try to get to the bare minimum of consciousness, not like Jason does. And it grinds on Jason that he seems to take it for granted.

“Whatever. I’m headed out. I’m sure Raven will keep you company until you heal your broken bones. Again.”
