Cute Little Hedgehog #hedgehog #cute
hi dr. ferox & crew! i work with primates in the states and am interested in the captivity politics. the general consensus among US vets seems to condemn primate pethood, but i know of one in my area with a huge youtube following that shows off his pet marmoset. do australian vets have any kind of consensus on private hobbyist primate ownership, & is it common in australia? input from mods on their countries would be cool too if it's not too much trouble! thanks for yalls time :)
It’s completely illegal outside of a zoo setting. We have no native non-human primates, and keeping one as a pet would be viewed somewhere between a bit weird and abhorrent.

Prynhawn,
Vets in the United States definitely condemn keeping primates as pets, and so does most of the general public. (You can find an example of the laws regarding owning primates here)
There’s also the movie industry, which has a lot of complicated politics about how primate “actors” are perceived, and how featuring primates on screen adds to the illegal pet trade that runs rampant in the States.
We’ve established that keeping primates as pets is illegal, but unfortunately that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen. The black market for exotic pets is a huge thing in the US, and if you have enough money and know the right people you can pretty much get what you want. Here’s some information about that:

Primates are not pets
Because I also come from the other side of the pond, I’ve looked up some sources on how the UK is dealing with it, and you can find those here:

UK government’s efforts to stop the illegal wildlife trade
The Royal Family on illegal wildlife trade

I think that any vet would agree with Dr. Ferox when she says that primates should not be kept as pets. In fact, most people would. If I ever encountered someone who had a monkey as a pet I would be more than a little worried, and would definitely look into what authorities to contact to ensure the welfare of the animal.

Stop supporting this kind of content!!
I’m tiered of seeing those “aesthetic” Instagram videos featuring exotic animals popping up on my dashboard.
This one in particular really got to me. When I took a look at the notes on the video I was surprised by the number of people who praised it vs the almost non-existent amount of those who criticized it.
As pretty as this may look these tigers are not living happy lives. You can see the city buildings in the background-my guess is Dubai or Qatar. Whoever owns these probably has too much money and doesn't know (or care about) the moral implications of having these tigers in captivity.
FURTHERMORE
White tigers are incredibly inbred and unhealthy animals kept alive only to make profit off. I won’t go into detail but here is a good explanation of just how immoral it is to keep breeding white tigers.
Please don't give in to these kind of videos! By liking/reblogging you are just encouraging and justifying animal cruelty!
Illegal Pets: I don't really have a good rationale behind this one, but I will take a swing at explaining it.... Pets, our lack of one and apparent inability to get one, is a constant topic of conversation between myself and my younger son. We keep trying to come up with some sort of engaging animal that he would enjoy caring for that wouldn't cause an anaphylactic allergic reaction in his dad. At some point, we discussed the possibility of a ferret, and even visited a pet shop that featured them while we were out of town. Because of course, they are still notoriously illegal as pets in NYC. A quote from the press release from the NYC health department regarding ferret illegality: "Ferrets are known for their unpredictable behavior, and they are prone to vicious, unprovoked attacks on humans....In New York... a ferret could crawl through holes in walls or travel along risers or ducts to other apartments, with potentially tragic consequences for the neighbor of a ferret owner." Sounds bad, doesn't it? And kind of funny. I suspect dogs present a much bigger threat to city dwelling humans. Although the concept of roving packs of malicious ferrets creeping through the ductwork of large apartment building to attack unsuspecting neighbors makes a fine horror film plot. Not that I am campaigning for ferrets in the city in general or in our home.... I just needed something to pair with the Giant African Land Snail to provide a sense of scale. Alas, enormous snails are not legal as pets in the entire United States. There is apparently some risk that they could become a dangerous agricultural pest...and that they can also damage buildings. (But can they go through ducts to attack neighbors?) So, while I find the idea of a huge pet snail very entertaining to contemplate, it seems I will not be able to get a 10" tall snail for my son to snuggle. He is not sad about that.

Steps to Find an Exotic Pet
Ever considered a pet a little more unusual than the typical cat, dog, guinea pig or pet mouse? For some pet owners, exotic pets are the only way to go but they do require specific care and maintenance and, in some countries and states, many are illegal. An exotic animal in Australia is any animal that is non-native. Here are some tips on keeping exotic animals as pets, from Kevin Davies, the Pet…

Pretty sure if it wasn't illegal to have them as pets in California, I would be the world's first raccoon lady. I love cats, but I love trash pandas more.
My roommate has stolen my hamster
I am okay with this... mostly because I steal her turtle all the time.
oh, good, people are apparently illegally buying baby alligators in minnesota and releasing them into the wild when they get too big.
some lady in anoka county...
^ right there
...nearly shit her pants when she went out to her mailbox and saw a giant ass alligator outside
and what's more, this apparently happens EVERY YEAR IN MINNESOTA.
you fucking morons, alligators cannot live here. you want gators? move to florida, you'll get your share! and you won't even have to kidnap them.
you know what happened to this one? it was shot.
your beloved, precious little baby was shot. and would have frozen to death soon, anyway.
