7. “You’re a horrible person.”

Things Antimony didn’t like about Illira: her smirk, the wayshe laughed (definitely at her and not with her), her inappropriate confidence.

The way she’d taken to those metal claws like she had alwayswanted such a weapon. The way they pricked at Antimony’s throat. The way coldblue eyes judged her, all the while leaning over Tilza’s prone body.

She didn’t like the way Illira owned a room. She didn’t likeIllira’s disregard for… just about everything Antimony held important. And notjust disregard but outright distaste. Even when they were drinking together.She didn’t like how it always felt like a competition.

She didn’t like Illira’s bitterness, or her dependence, orthe way she used her body.

She didn’t like that she had to make sure to be a safedistance away before she uttered the words, “You’re a horrible person.” Shedidn’t like that this only made Illira throw the words right back at her. Shedidn’t like that it stuck.

WS!Illira to Hannah - Δ: playing with their hair

Hannah stiffened at the first half-felt pluck on a single strand of her unruly hair. Blue eyes going wide and staring at the wall across from her, Hannah’s senses narrowed down to the sensation of long Mordesh fingers on her head, in her hair, moving. Hannah’s lips disappeared between her teeth and she tried to swallow her tongue, throat closing up, face red and warm.

It took her a long minute before her muscles freed up enough for her to notice she’d leaned her head into the Mordesh’s hand. Instincts arose, crackling her arms, to pull away and slam her hands down over her hair as though to protect some physical weakness from attack. But for the moment, her arms and shoulders remained paralyzed. The most she could do was close her eyes, lean her head forward a few sparse centimeters, and croak, “Stars! Stop it.”

Character theories: ARR!Illira

ARR!Illira is so against breaking the law to affect change that I have to imagine that she maybe tried it at some point. How could you not in Ul’dah? It’s full of people getting rich by hurting people, and a small number of very powerful individuals who hold onto their place in society through intimidation and outright murder. If their power depends on murder, what happens when one is murdered? That power collapses, right?

Only it doesn’t. It would only take one bloody step into that mess to find out that the violence is a product of the system, and cannot fix it. No matter how many corrupt officials you take out, more shuffle in to take their place. The bloodshed quickly becomes too much, and you realize that in the real world, you need to be able to look at the corruption without letting it pull you in. The only way to fix it is with long-term policy decisions that fill in the pits where that corruption dwells.

And that’s why Illira can’t be in Ul’dah. She can’t look at that corruption without feeling it pull at her. She’s doing what she can from a distance.
