Se supone que la vida, la auténtica vida, es una lucha, una acción y una afirmación inagotable, la voluntad embistiendo con su cabeza roma contra la pared del mundo, cosas por el estilo, pero cuando vuelvo la vista atrás me doy cuenta de que la mayor parte de mis energías se dedicaron siempre a la simple búsqueda de cobijo, de comodidad, de, sí, lo admito, un rincón acogedor. Comprenderlo se me hace sorprendente, por no decir escandaloso. Antes me veía como una especie de bucanero, enfrentándome a todo el que se me ponía a tiro con un alfanje entre los dientes, pero ahora me veo obligado a reconocer que me engañaba. Esconderme, protegerme, guarecerme, eso es todo lo que realmente he querido siempre, amadrigarme en un lugar de calor uterino y quedarme allí encogido, oculto de la indiferente mirada del sol y de la severa erosión del aire. Por eso el pasado supone para mí un refugio, allí voy de buena gana, me froto las manos y me sacudo el frío presente y el frío futuro. Y no obstante, ¿Cuál es la verdadera existencia del pasado?
