Soviet Il-2 aircraft attacking a German motorized column near Kursk, Russia
Jul 1943.
The Il-2 originally flew with a Mikulin AM-38 V-12 engine. No one has made an AM-38 engine run in decades. In today’s world, the AM-38 is highly unusual, difficult to maintain, and a mystery to engine rebuilders. That is a bit much to swallow if you want to fly the aircraft regularly!
In order to get the FHC’s Il-2 in flying shape, a more dependable American engine was substituted. The plane is now equipped with an Allison V-1710-113 V-12 engine. The power plant and propeller are from a P-38 Lightning fighter and are left-hand turning—just as an AM-38 would be.
The Ilyushin Il-2 was a ground-attack aircraft in the Second World War, produced by the Soviet Union in very large numbers. With 36,183 examples of the Il-2 produced during the war, and in combination with its successor, the Ilyushin Il-10, a total of 42,330 were built, making it the single most produced military aircraft design in aviation history.
