When I was an enthusiastic teen determined to read all the classics, I experienced the entirety of unabridged Moby Dick. If someone asks me now? “There was a lot about wales, yes?” (Otherwise known as, “good luck, it won’t scar you for life.”)
I pretty much let the whale tangents flow right through my brain without retaining anything about them. Like, I don’t mind the descriptions of how whaling vessels work, because I wouldn’t know if he didn’t tell me, but I can do without the 2 (yes, 2) whole chapters in which he just ranks pictures of whales he’s seen in his lifetime in order of how rad he thought they were
