When I was an enthusiastic teen determined to read all the classics, I experienced the entirety of unabridged Moby Dick. If someone asks me now? “There was a lot about wales, yes?” (Otherwise known as, “good luck, it won’t scar you for life.”)

I pretty much let the whale tangents flow right through my brain without retaining anything about them.  Like, I don’t mind the descriptions of how whaling vessels work, because I wouldn’t know if he didn’t tell me, but I can do without the 2 (yes, 2) whole chapters in which he just ranks pictures of whales he’s seen in his lifetime in order of how rad he thought they were

Last night my sister (an artist for 20+ years) was griping that she couldn't figure out how to do anime/cartoon art that looked like the person AND wasn't 'stiff'. (She wants to try her hand at anime-fing real people.) So I showed off your stuff -very different from her style- and we spent almost an hour oooing and ahhing over it. She especially loved the different mediums/ways you used the same character design for Mae. He got lots of love!

You have no idea how much this means to me and how much I needed this this morning, omg ;~;

So which of the Awful Office Quartet has an Elf on the Shelf and what kind of horrors have Melkor & Gothmog subjected it to?

All four of them had an elf on the shelf the first year they were really a thing, but Thil banned it after eight days.  It turned into an escalating competition for who could make the most disturbing scene in someone else’s office.  There were no fewer than six gruesome murder scenes, three replacement elves, and a disturbing amount of blood--real, actual blood that no one (Melkor) would admit to procuring (Melkor).  It was a zero sum game, and Thil was absolutely not willing to see how far it would go.  

There is only one elf on the shelf in Angband now.  It’s in the coding lab.  Why, you ask?  Because Mairon, alone of everyone in the building, has realized the true utility of the elf on the shelf--that is, as a mechanism to spy on the people you’re in charge of.  Which sounds like regular elf on the shelf, I guess, except that Mairon put a camera in the elf and uses it to spy on his underlings.  Then he confronts them on behavior/actions/mistakes/etc he should not reasonably know about, which in turn just fuels his underlings’ suspicion that he is, in fact, some kind of omnipresent, omnipotent god-like being.  Mairon does absolutely nothing to dispel these suspicions.  It’s the true spirit of Christmas.

It’s the Barnes and Noble Classic edition!  I don’t know if the deal is still going on, but last weekend, all the B&N classics were $5.

That was hilarious! I love that even though I kind of knew where it was going, I still was a little surprised!

🧡🧡I’m so glad you liked it! I was caught in this weird place of like... being super cliche and trying to sidestep a trope at the same time? So I’m glad I managed to surprise you at least a little :)

It was soooo good! Much better than S1, I thought. Spot on casting for Spock and I loved Capt Pike!

It really was. It’s been too long since I saw S1, which I also really enjoyed, to be able to say whether it was better - though I was never a huge fan of Klingons, so I’d probably agree that there is slightly more in S2 that I enjoy... Either way, it was definitely great.

I liked Pike a lot more than I was expecting to, tbh. I think what I like about Discovery is the psychological complexity of all the characters. Wish Stamets had had a little more screentime, but really enjoyed getting more of Saru - and really of all the characters, including Michael, who’s the main character anyway, so you’d expect to see more of her, but I guess Discovery did it in a way that I haven’t got used to yet, with a far more critical stance towards even its main character...
