I don’t think the affair was necessary, but it wasn’t out of character either. Not that much, at least. Getting drunk, doing whatever? Pretty fitting for this chaotic idiot. 

He did love her, maybe not as romantically as many people want to think; he admired her and respected her. She was a very important part of his journey, and made him realise many things about himself.

yeah it is misunderstood. What I don’t like is how it is thrown in with all those endlessly repetitive YA novels. It was written in 1993 and was published for an adult audience.
