if you could choose any particular sea to inhabit as a mermaid, which would it be? alternatively, what are your favorite songs that make you feel like you’re a siren at sea? 💗

what an enchanting question!! I both love the thought of living in warmer waters and colorful sea-life but the thought of being hidden amongst glacial icecaps also appeals to me so I think ideally I’d follow a pod of whales along their migration route throughout the year and get the best of both marine habitats!!!

probably the gray whale migration route so I can play with seals in kelp forests and bask in the sun (pacific ocean), then play hide and seek with polar bear cubs under the ice (arctic ocean), and play with whale calfs in between (sea of cortés or the open ocean)!!! and then when I feel like a vacation I’d break off and explore the colorful coral reefs in the coral sea or the caribbean sea!! 

yes I have absolutely thought/daydreamed about this very same question since I was a kid, no I am not apologizing for the MDU (mermaid daydream universe)

20. tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

i’m a simple bitch which means that there’s a 1,000 things that i want people to know (lmao). 

the biggest being the symbolism/reference to water being a rebirth; there’s three times in ancient names where elliot finds herself in water (not like rain, but like, in water) and each time was very purposeful. 1.) the beginning of the story, when john is trying to “baptize” drown her; 2.) when kian wakes her up by dunking her in the same river to then try and hunt her for sport, which ultimately ends up being the most cathartic experience elliot because she gets to obliterate his face with a blunt object; 3.) the second “actual” baptism, which is simultaneously a thing that elliot wants and doesn’t want, and which is then witnessed by the one person whose opinion she really values (and who is still alive), burke.

i also really love the concept of the hanahaki disease, the Very Anime disease where someone who is plagued with unrequited love coughs up flower petals (and will eventually die unless their love is reciprocated), which i included one time in ancient names without explaining in the notes and now once in witching hour with explaining in the notes. it was a direct callback to the idea that john is continuously trying to have a foot in both worlds even though elliot tells him he can’t, because ultimately the continuous lying and attemps at just manipulating her rather than just being upfront is going to end up fucking him over nonstop.

favorite relationship? ell and jacob. they definitely would have killed each other but in my brain, after jacob saw what she did to kian, he thought. hm. yeah. survival genes. nice. and they had this weird tentative alliance after that.

uhHH yeah i could talk for a thousand years about the things i put in ancient names because i had so many and then never extrapolated on them asjdkhd i’m sorry this is so fucking long!!!!

25. what part of writing is the most fun?

the dialogue!!! in case you haven’t noticed, (lmao), i write really dialogue heavy stuff. i think it’s my stronger quality as an author and that i’m weaker in the scene building/set-up, because i love a good zinger/one-liner. especially where john is concerned. i tend to write things that i like, and what i like are black comedies/horror comedies, and so i love writing john seed in this context because the absolute incredulity that this absurd series of events has become his life but also it’s not that weird, considering who he is and where he’s come from, is so so so fun.

also, of course, getting to share it. i love getting to connect with people over my writing. i’ve made so many awesome friends here in this fandom and getting to share and just like!!! idk pandemic times but i still get to make new friends and chat with people!! that’s just cool imo
