*By worse, I mean both as an adaptation and as a movie. Do you think it holds up compared to the original? The characters are obviously different from their original sources, but do you think they're written well regardless? Does the story make sense as a standalone?

The majority of peoples’ names in Sweet Chariot are meaningful but in the cases of the characters that do a lot more harm in the story than good they’re usually meaningful in a dishonest way

Like, the Aula-handpicked “forger of knights” who raised Cepheid was named Hemera, which comes from a Greek word meaning sky--a concept synonymous with freedom and a sort of...personal sovereignty and moral compass as a warrior in Caesuran culture, for obvious reasons i.e. they can fly. Operating in the occupied, exploited, and consequently poor and dangerous Derafior City, she offered her students freedom and glory--but she ultimately used them, for her own gain and that of the empire, and valued their obedience over their true potential. Feeding them a line about finally getting out of their dead end situations, she actually focused on trying to snuff out any possibility of rebellious behavior. The prefix hemer-, in the context of other words, can also mean “to break, to tame.”

The captain of the Anthesphoria, to whom Shade was an umbralis until the point of her rebellion, has the first name Hestia, after the Greek goddess of the home, domesticity, and the state. Shade’s motivations in vol. 1 make it entirely clear that she sees her umbralis position as a home and hearth, a secure safe haven that she’s desperate to get back to. But when Hestia actually shows up, it’s as an agent of state power and authority, and that power is firmly turned against the personal safety of her charges.
