Setzer in Kingdom Hearts II

I've never played Kingdom Hearts before. Never ever. And so naturally, I have no clue what really goes on other than there's disney characters and ff7 characters from time to time. That's about it.

However, my mom recently informed me that SETZER is apparently in the game. So I went ahead, looked it up. And yes, he's in the game!!...But with a few...quirks, I'll say. Because.

I'm scared. Who is that. What happened to him. Where's the silly gambler I know and love.

Looking it up, google just says he looks like this because his design is--obviously-- based on his appearance in FFVI but..? I'd argue this looks like a completely different character.

I get that Amano's designs can be difficult to translate into games, especially since Kingdom Hearts II came out in 2005, but I'm just confused as to why they made his design so, so different. I think the coat and the (barely visible) scars are the only things that clue me in that he's Setzer. 💔 Seeing it for the first time was JARRING I can't even lie.
