For the end of year book asks I’m curious about #38 because you always have good book recs and reviews.
38. Releases you’re looking forward to next year: I feel like this is the universe playing a joke on me because just the other day I realized that I haven't done my hunt for 2023 releases yet and was lowkey stress over it. I was even debating whether to even have any since I read only 3-5 out of 20+ of my 2022 anticipated reads. But that said, according to my StoryGraph there's 4 books coming out next year on my to-read shelf:
I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself by Marisa Crane [Jan 17 2023; a dystopian story where people who commit crime receive an extra shadow for every crime they commit rather than being incarcerated but as such these individuals face discrimination and the main protag has to raise a child while facing these obstacles]
Black Earth Wisdom: Soulful Conversations with Black Environmentalists by Leah Penniman [Feb 28 2023; nonfiction book on Black Environmentalists written by the woman who co-founded the Soul Fire Farm]
The Scourge Between Stars by Ness Brown [April 4 2023; a scifi horror novella about a spaceship of humans attempting to return to Earth after failing to colonize another planet]
Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah [April 4 2023; another dystopian exploring a law enforcement system and examining the treatment of those who find themselves the victim of the department's inherent corruption - this is the same author who wrote Friday Black, the anthology Jacob Geller recommended in I think 2 of his videos; I've read the anthology and liked it too]
Me: Dang, I really should watch the Mandalorian. I need to catch up
Also Me: Rewatches my Chaos Bois TM for the 99th time
I don’t know why it has taken a year for this to occur to me but imagine
Stiles is an actor and Mitch is his stunt double.
Berserk spoilers but do you ever think about how like
Berserk is a story that involves an androgynous person viciously bullying a conventionally masculine guy, and he ends up sacrificing his friends and ushering in a lil apocalpyse to become a god because he doesn’t give a shit about anybody but himself?
And then the main antagonist of Dark Souls 3, which was partly inspired by Berserk, is an androgynous person who never bullied anybody and only has a role in the coming apocalypse because he was raised to be a sacrifice and had the absolute gall to stand up for himself and his worth as a person? And the storyline just presents this to you at face value like ok you know the drill, go get him?
Like I don’t remember Berserk ever directly connecting Griffith’s androgyny to him acting like a piece of shit, he’s written as a piece of shit who also happens to be androgynous. But when the first story makes the androgynous person the villain, the takeaway in the story that it inspires still seems to be that androgynous people specifically might just be shifty motherfuckers who might cause the end of the world? Not that chasing ambition is bad? If Lothric was inspired in any part by Griffith, the only things that ended up carrying over were superficial details and circumstances. Ambition was the fatal flaw that actually made Griffith a villain, and Berserk discusses this to death, and Lothric’s idea of ambition is literally hiding in his room until he dies. And now we’ve got two stories about androgynous people the main character has got to kill.
