Project 2! (Image Construction)
My project 2 post is going to be split into 3 posts, the first being Image construction, the second being final images and the third being final layout. In creating these images, I followed a standard procedure, where I drew the images out in pencil, followed it up by line drawing and finally colour pencilled the lines (which act as stream of consciousness) that go through each frame. What we see on the left is two out of 6 compositions. I’m displaying these two compositions as those two were what deviated during my process.
In all my images, I initially wanted a thin line image for my character, of which she would be displayed in ink. This was because I wanted to create a strong character who could stand out against the colour even while being in black and white. However, after the first drawing, I felt like she lost impact as a character (especially envisioning her against a coloured background) and therefore decided to add a strong black outline to her frame. This was the first major change I decided to make against my planning.
The second major change was drawing the final image in ink compared to drawing the final image in colour pencil and making it full colour. In looking at its impact as a final image, I wanted both the character to stand out and the colours to stand out as well - thus resulting in the image as a culmination of both colour pencil and ink compared to simply just ink over colour and colour over ink as seen in the previous two images. Furthermore, when keeping the objective of narrative in mind while creating these images, I really wanted to foster a sense of continuity throughout the images instead of having too large a deviation. There’s a sense of subtlety in terms of change though, as you don’t really see the differences when putting the images together and that’s what I really wanted to focus on as I did not want to have images which stood out too much from each other. I really wanted the audience to look at the pictures once or twice and then start to get the feeling of a slow and gradual change of “oh there’s colour starting to come in) which was cohesive to the storyline of home, where the character slowly tries to understand what home is to her and eventually comes to a solid conclusion on the last and final image.
The third and final huge change I made was the layout and composition (which you’ll see in the final layout post). As I was looking through the images, I was thinking about audience experience, and instead of wanting a 3 x 2 layout like I originally planned for, I ended up going for a 6 x 1 layout. This is a hugely significant change in my opinion as the idea of narrative will really come through with this change. (I’ll explain this in the final layout post).
