The return of Kevin the Carrot
This post is about “In Aldi’s Christmas Ad, Kevin the Carrot Encourages Cooks to Embrace Showmanship” article. This is the link to the article: https://www.adweek.com/agencies/in-aldis-christmas-ad-kevin-the-carrot-encourages-cooks-to-embrace-showmanship/
The article is about Aldi’s Christmas commercials. In 2016, Kevin the Carrot made his debut in the supermarket’s commercial. Since then, he became an annual fixture of Aldi’s Christmas commercials. The character’s popularity grows every year. “Kevin’s magical Big Top is the perfect environment to showcase the amazing quality of the Aldi Christmas range of food and drink this year.” (Griner, 2019)
This article caught my interest, since it’s about Aldi which is a worldwide supermarket that you can also find in the Netherlands (where I’m from). I usually love supermarket commercials, especially the Christmas ones. I think they’re creative and entertaining and they always put me in the Christmas mood.
The article made me question how much it costed to make the Aldi Christmas commercials. It’s animation, so all of the characters and objects have to be drawn by a professional. It must be very expensive to create an ad like this one.
Another question that came in my mind is: why did they chose a carrot to be the main character of the commercial? When I think about it, I think they chose a carrot because it is a very wintery vegetable, perfect for representing Christmas dinner.
I also wonder how they come up with a new commercial idea every year for Christmas. I think they have a creative team that brainstorms about concepts for new commercials. They obviously want to keep the Kevin the Carrot, because of his popularity. I think it’s good to have Kevin the Carrot coming back annually, because people like him and they will remember him and the ad.
Overall, I think Aldi does a great job on their Christmas commercials starring Kevin the Carrot. The ads are creative and fun to watch.
