I'm Glad I'm Not You Chapter 4
The next few days flew past in a rapid blur. I spent Christmas day at home sitting on my sofa and watching reruns of Friends because Ed had sort of made me a fan of the show. I normally wasn’t a big TV girl, but the show was actually hilarious and I mentally thanked Ed for introducing me to it. Christmas day was just a relaxing day for me by myself. I finished some homework for UNI and made myself a small chicken dinner. It wasn’t that good and I ate it alone, but at least it was food.
I kept busy during the week by working extra hours. I hadn’t thought of Ed or Mike all week; I was far too busy. The thrift store I worked at was closed during the holiday time, but the café was the exact opposite. Business was booming, and almost every night I stayed late and closed up. I didn’t mind the work, plus I needed the money. UNI classes were expensive, especially since I was getting a theatre major and renting my own flat out instead of staying at the campus. The costs added up, so I was glad I had to jobs to help pay the bills. I was working at the café today, too.
I sighed as I flipped by the pages of my magazine. It was some fashion magazine that I had found lying on the counter in kitchen of the café, and the words on the page were as foreign to me as a different language. What was color blocking? I was about to educate myself on the art of color blocking when the bell rang, indicating that someone had come in. Exasperated, I blew the hair out of my face, and went to greet the customer.
I scowled when I saw who it was. It was Carl, my boss, and he was returning from his two hour extra break. I was supposed to have my break an hour ago, but he hadn’t yet come back from his. Frowning, I crossed my arms.
“Hey, Holden,” he said easily, walking around me to get to the kitchen. “Would you mind seating these customers?” It took me a couple seconds to register that he actually had customers trailing in behind me. Unsurprisingly, it was Ed and an older woman. Ed was popping up everywhere lately.
“Hi,” He grinned, and I couldn’t help but grin back. “I didn’t know you were working here today,” he said, and I caught his mum give him a knowing glance. I looked expectantly at the woman behind him and she was smiling at me, too. “Oh, this is my mum,” He said, nodding towards the woman. She pushed past him.
“I’m Imogen,” She said, shaking my hand. “It’s so nice to finally meet you,” She smiled softly down at me, and I felt my chest clench up. She was so nice.
“I’m Holden,” I introduced myself, and wiped my hands on the front of my apron. I grabbed two menus from the podium, and quickly said, “You guys can follow me right this way.”
Once they were nicely situated in a slightly private booth, I handed them their menus and awkwardly waited for them to both look up at me. “Um, should I get you started with some drinks?”
His mum said, “I’ll just take a water, love.”
“Same,” Ed said and I nodded. I was just about to leave to fill their drink orders, when his mum spoke up again.
“I love your necklace, Holden!” She chirped, and her eyes landed on my simple necklace. It was a small, silver half heart with a tiny silver chain. My hand instinctively went up and clenched the necklace. It was cool, and I could feel it pressing hard into my palm. My mouth opened to reply, but nothing came out. I couldn’t speak.
Carl came out of the kitchen, and gave me a glare that was obviously not amused. My mouth closed and I quickly said, “I’ll get those drinks out for you right away,” and hurried into the kitchen. My heart was pounding hard as I poured their water into clear cups. I couldn’t shake off the feelings. Even after 2 years, I still got this way whenever anyone mentioned my necklace or anything related to that night.
Carl came back into the kitchen and sighed when he saw me frozen over by the drinks. “What’s wrong with you, now?” I shook my head.
“Nothing, I’m fine,” I smiled, and picked up the drinks to give to them.
“Good,” he said simply. “Because you’ve got another table to cover. Get out there, kiddo,” I rolled my eyes at him and made my way back over to the table where Ed and his mum sat.
“Here you go,” I said, placing their drinks on the table. “So, what can I get you to eat?” I pulled out my small pad of paper and pencil from my apron.
“Actually-” Ed’s mum began; at the same time Ed said “I’ll have a piece-” Then they both stopped and stared at each other awkwardly, and it looked like Ed was shooting his mum looks. I felt so out of the loop. I cleared my throat.
“Okay,” Ed sighed, and I confusedly stared at both of them.
“Yes! Holden, love, would you like to join us for our New Year’s Eve get together tonight? It’s small, nothing extravagant, I promise.”
I looked at Ed to see if he was okay with this. He was staring down at the table and I could see a faint blush starting across his cheeks. I didn’t have any plans tonight, after I got off work, so I shrugged.
“Erm, sure, I suppose. I don’t have any plans for tonight, so yeah.” I said, awkwardly putting away the pad of paper.
“Great!” Imogen said, smiling brightly. “We’ll see you there, then? Ed can pick you up later tonight and bring you over to our house.” I dumbly nodded and watched as she slid out of the booth, with Ed in tow. “Thank you so much for everything. It was so great to meet you tonight, love. I’ll see you later!” She gave me a short hug and turned to Ed expectantly.
“See you there,” he mumbled, not looking at me. I felt my face heat up.
“Okay,” I said, walking them to the door. “See you there,” I replied quietly to Ed, but they were already halfway across the street.
