OH MY GOD. THIS IS. TALENT! SUCH TALENT OMG ALL OF YOU GUYS HERE ARE JUST *CHEF KISS* MWAH MWAH!! AWESOME!! Keep living the best life y'all!!
Dazai cares for Chuuya
Dazai let himself deliberately beat up by Chuuya for the sake of their future partnership
Chuuya didn’t believe it, and neither should you!
Timing, it surely wasn’t a coincidence Dazai got himself captured the Moment Chuuya returned.
He could have threatened Chuuya the moment he walked in, or the Moment he realized something was off.
He didn’t need to wait for someone to free him, he was able to leave whenever he wanted to.
He never needed the Information he said he wanted Chuuya to provide him with, he already knew them.
He made sure Chuuya knew this wasn’t about their alignment, not about ADA and Port Mafia, but about their Partnership before he actually took the first hit he didn’t dodge.
Dazai admitted he had a Plan, and Chuuya couldn’t foil it
But if the Plan never required to meet Chuuya, and we know Dazai despises physical agony if avoidable, then why would he go trough it, unless it’s part of the Plan?
Dazai knows Chuuya HATES USELESS VIOLENCE, so it’s safe to assume Dazai knows this isn’t something Chuuya does, he has been the one of the two responsible for the torturing. Seeing in Dark Era and in the short conversation with Kouyou. That Chuuya even choose to show up, and consider doing so just is proof that he was in fact deeply hurt by Dazai’s decision. Because it goes out of character for him. Perhaps that’s why we see Dazai in the beginning of the panel act a little surprised to hear his voice? Despite calculating it, or even planning to run into him.
But he also knows Chuuya is safe, because Chuuya may kill, but he does not torture. He would not let Dazai be in agony that’s not something Chuuya would do, and that's what we see, he calms down after just two strikes, tired of it. He got his point down, he doesn’t want to continue to beat into him, he doesn’t want to see him broken.
HE LEAVES CHUUYA A FUCKING CHOICE! But did anyone capture what that choice really meant? It was never about killing Dazai or letting him go? Because we all know Chuuya wouldn’t have killed him, he let him plenty of time and was already from the beginning on wary that Dazai would pull some sort of bullshit. It was about Chuuya choosing to be flagged as a traitor, or help a traitor willingly with words.
He didn’t need Chuuyas help here, it was more to make a point to Chuuya. It gave Chuuya the possibility to let out his frustration, because probably Dazai was fully aware that he deserved this hits for leaving Chuuya in the dark without as much as a word. But he also made it very clear how meaningless the word traitor actually is. He never betrayed Chuuya, he betrayed the mafia.
And of fucking course he ends his little lessons, with reminding Chuuya that he could still trust him.
This is important y'all this is why Chuuya decided to use corruption with Lovecraft, because after all the dipshit Dazai pulls on him, when it comes to his well-being he always leaves him with shitty choices but never goes back on his words!
Like let that sink in! Chuuya never knew him as a kind mentor like Atsushi, or as someone with lazy work ethics like Kunikida, nor as a friend like Oda, he has known Dazai as someone utterly cunning seeing trough people and manipulating them.
(It’s surely not a coincidence that this is the only time we see some sort of hurt on Chuuya face, when he talks about past Dazai, he misses his old partner not because he was a cunning jerk but because they were partners.)
In a way he is probably one of the few people that truly understands why Dazai was called demon prodigy. His problem with Dazai comes with thinking that Dazai only sees him and others as his Pawns, because obviously he is super shity with words to everyone else but Atsushi. That is a frightening thought to be just a chest figure for your partner and it’s triggers him to leash out on him whenever he can. But At this moment, here, it also gives him comfort. Because it’s still Dazai. It’s still his partner, the one as he knew him, he has not changed for the better, because manipulating people isn’t something a morally good person would do. So he can still see him as the devil, which makes it easier to let him go /lose him again.
And can we talk about how relived Dazai looks here, when he realizes that also Chuuya is still his obvious same, still the other half of Soukoku. And it’s sad and beautiful because in a way it’s here were they actually form again, without this meeting the battle with Lovecraft would probably look very different. It's here that both of them decide that they are still the same they once knew. But at the same time it’s this sameness that also taints their relationship because what stood between them in the past doesn’t disappear all the misunderstandings and frustration come back as well.
There is no proof for this claim but it's a strong possibility I wanted to point out nonetheless. Given how long Dazai was an Executive there is a high chance that just like Kyouka later demonstrates during Canabalism twice:
That he too could have marched in and out the building unseen if he so choose after all he promised Chuuya to make it look as if he was rescued, and that means he must have walked out without being seen, so he still knew how to be unseen. There is also a good chance that he would have gotten this information trough Ango, because just like he once was assigned, the government still spies on the Mafia activities.
Kafka could have revealed us Ango’s Character instead of Chuuya’s, but again this was an important step to their relationship development, it gave Chuuya the possibility of some sort of closure after the betrayal. Here is why there is still trust. Because Chuuya knows Daza is as shitty as ever, and instead of just saying what he means to say, he lets him run in his calculated master plan until eventually he comes to the conclusion himself.
This is also why Soukoku still works after their separation. Dazai knew what his partner needed him to do in order to be forgiven enough to fight alongside with him if need be. He didn’t need a half-assed apology, or an explanation, (he probably figured the reasons himself) he needed him to feel at least a fraction of the pain and sorrow Chuuya had felt by his betrayal. Especially because to Chuuya it must seem that Dazai is incapable to empathize with others, he left like no strings ever were attached, he seems to be calm and calculated, and that’s frustrating. Chuuya needed him to know how he had felt and a punch in the guts came pretty close to it.
