This story was produced for 103.3 KWBU FM. It profiles Nick and Eloisa Haynes, a mixed-immigration-status couple, who have recently learned that Eloisa's application for naturalization was denied. Nick, her husband, is a US Citizen. KWBU's Becky Fogel spoke with them as well as Kathleen Campbell Walker (an immigration attorney), and Maria Elena Upson (a spokeswoman for USCIS.)
When Nick and Eloisa Haynes got married, Nick was a US Citizen and Eloisa was undocumented. Now Eloisa's a Legal Permanent Resident, but in February 2013 the couple learned that her application for naturalization was denied. Pastor Alvarado remembers a time when the Waco public school district banned undocumented students from attending. He and members of his church scrambled to put together classes serving around 50 students and needing to turn away others. As a pastor for over 37 years, he's seen his parishioners struggle with a number of immigration issues - an experience he says a lot of other local churches are lacking. Now a new initiative is seeking to bring together leaders from Waco's largely segregated churches to address and demand comprehensive immigration reform. I spoke to Alvarado, who describes himself as a "practical preacher" a few days before the event.
