STUDIES ON THE SERUM BIOCHEMICAL PROFILE OF Oreochromis mossambicus FED WITH Moringa olefiera LEAF EXTRACT | UTTAR PRADESH JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY
The physiological status of a fish is represented by its serum biochemical profile. All forms of environmental stress, including exposure to pathogenic organisms, generate changes in the fish's physiological processes, which are reflected in the composition of its blood serum. The blood biochemical profile of Oreochromis mossambicus was examined in this study to determine the effect of Moringa olefiera leaf extract supplementation through feed on the fish's immunocompetence. The optimal option for disease control in aquaculture operations is to boost the immune system of the fish. Many botanicals have been shown to improve the immunological health of fish to varied degrees. In this work, serum biochemical parameters were examined to confirm that Oreochromis mossambicus given Moringa olefiera leaf extract had increased immunocompetence. The experimental fishes had substantial differences in total protein, albumin, globulin, and the albumin/globulin ratio. Fish given Moringa olefiera leaf extract had higher total protein, albumin, and globulin levels. In the control and experimental fishes, however, the albumin/globulin ratio remained rather stable. In the experimental fishes, serum glucose levels were somewhat higher than in the control fishes. Thus, the increased levels of serum biochemical markers indicate a change in the fish's physiological status, which could be attributed to the immune system's activation and subsequent production of immune-related proteins in fish given Moringa olefiera leaf extract.
