7. Historical dressing, uniform or costume?
I’m always a giant sucker for 18th century fashion, but for women’s gowns i’d take a robe a l’anglaise over the sack-back cut of a robe a la francaise any day, even if it means having to deal with an extra skirt. Menswear is all about elaborate waistcoats and elaborate neck-wear - cravats, ascots, neck-stocks, the flashier the better.
i also adore the Gibson Girl look and classical greek hairstyles, they’re an amazing blend of intricacy and practicality.
17. What historical item would you like to own?
the jean-antoine houdon marble bust of thomas jefferson that’s currently in the MFA in boston. not only is it a fantastic piece of sculpture, but it would make the absolute best hat stand.
29. Great historical mystery you are interested in?
What happened to Theodosia Burr Alston???? She supposedly died in a shipwreck off the carolina coast in 1812 but there’s actually a lot of disputed stories of what really went down (ranging from pirates to storms to a Karankawa chief finding her chained to a shattered bulkhead and receiving a gold locket with the name “Theodosia” inscribed on it before she died in his arms), shit’s weird
