Your eyes follow magically artificial stars on the ceiling as the storm outside the Academy walls rages on. You don't know how long you've been lying in the dark like this. Vega had left after he'd sent you to bed. He wanted to speak to Avior again, but that was all he had told you. But sleep doesn't come easy to you. Here alone in the darkness the fears that you tried your best to swallow down and bury deep within you keep haunting you, making it hard to breathe.
You were running out of time. Everyone knew. And despite everyone's best efforts, you aren't quite sure anything could be changed. This world is dying.
Taking a shuddering breath you curl up and roll to the side, facing the wall. Staring at the artificial stars only reinforced the knowledge of how long it had been since you had actually seen the Nightsky. Or the sun. Or anything else but stormy rain clouds.
Your cold fingers move over the soft sheets to wrap around the pillow. Vegas Pillow. You can still make out the faint scent of him as you hug it to your chest.
After the Academy had been taken over by the resistance you had started to stay here in his room. At first, it was to keep you safe in case they failed. Giving you ample alibi to lie to the imperium. After all, finding a young Electro Energetic trapped in a Sadism Demons room could only mean they had been kept there against their will.
You hate that Narrative. Time and time again Vega had reinforced that this was the story you would stick to should the plan go up in smoke, and as you had promised him, you would. He had made you repeat the words over and over until you could recite them perfectly. That way you wouldnt waver the moment you would be under pressure.
Every time the words had felt like ash in your mouth.
A lump forms in your throat at the thought of it. Should the resistance fail it would be a death sentence for all of them. And no matter how Great Vega said he was, the fear for him has you in a constant chokehold.
You know there is no surviving for you should they fail.
The sound of a rift behind you makes your heart skip a beat.
Quiet footsteps approach the bed before you feel a dip in the mattress.
You don't need to turn to know who it is. Your body knows. Your heart would recognize his presence anywhere. Vega makes your core sing.
A quote from a recent book you had read came to mind.
“I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.”
When you had read those words then, you had not quite understood the love of Patroclus for Achilles.
But as a soft hand gently brushes over your hair before tracing over the shell of your ear, you understand.
“I can tell you're awake, pet.”
His deep voice echoes in your mind softly. He never speaks to you like a human. In the beginning it had felt so strange to have another in your mind. The vulnerability has scared you. There isn't anything anyone can hide from this cruel man that thrived off pain. And yet no one has ever held you with such gentleness.
Vega holds your heart as if it was made of glass. So carefully he cradles it in his hands, it brings tears to your eyes when he isn't looking. His true nature is so different from what he was born to be.
“Look at me.”
A soft spoken command.
Slowly you uncurl and roll on your back to look at him. He is sitting on the bed next to you, his face outlined by the stars on the ceiling. There is no emotion betraying his face. But his eyes hold a softness only meant for you. Never once had anyone looked at you that way.
Your heart clenches at the thought of what lies ahead of him, of the both of you.
“So many thoughts and fears tying itself up into knots. Are they keeping you from sleep?”
You nod slowly. There is no need for words. Vega knows how you feel.
Silence falls between you as you lie there, taking him in. You have given this man all of you. Your trust, your heart and your body. And you'd do so over and over again. If he were to be taken away from you what would be left of you then?
The lump in your throat threatens to choke you.
A warm hand cups your cheek. The touch so endlessly soft it breaks your heart all over again.
“Vega…”, you manage to breathe before his thumb seals your lips again.
“I know, my pet.” He says quietly.
Lifting the blanket with one hand he kicks off his boots with a soft thud, before slowly sliding under the covers next to you.
Strong arms pull you closer until you're flush against his chest. You're always so surprised how seamlessly your body fits against his, as if you were always meant to be his counterpart. Vegas fingers thread into your hair, massaging your scalp as you settle against his chest, his steady heartbeat thumping in your ear. And for the first time tonight your anxiety eases. Vega was safe. Nothing could touch you in his embrace.
He has become a lot more physical lately. Soft touches and gentle caresses overweight the rough play of your lovemaking. And everytime you melt into him he seems so surprised, as if he can scarcely believe it.
“We must speak.” He then says and your stomach is in knots again.
You say nothing, your fingers fisting into the fabric of his shirt as you wait for him to continue.
“Vindemiator and his Human have left the Academy. They are no longer willing to fight.”
So they had decided to carve out whatever happiness they can still find in this dying world. You can't say you blame them. If Vega would give you the choice, you don't know what you would choose. In the end it doesn't really matter much. You would go where Vega is. Again you remember the book you had read. What were Patroclus words again?
“I will never leave him. It will be this, always, for as long as he will let me.”
“I have spoken to Avior. Our forces are in place. We will make the attempt tomorrow.”
So you have only tonight. Whatever tomorrow may bring, tonight is certain. You exhale the breath you have been holding and bury your face in his chest. You feel Vega chuckle, his chest rumbling underneath you. It always seemed so strange to you that his laughter was the only thing he did just like a human. You had never physically heard his voice out loud unless in such instances.
“Again you fear for me, my soft little pet. I gave you my word that I would not leave you and yet you are so full of fear.”
“I don't fear you will leave me of your own volition.” You finally say. “I fear they will take you away.”
The Imperium had taken so much from you. Nothing had ever been constant.
Another chuckle. “You think I will let them?”
No. he wouldn't. But as much trust as you placed in him, you couldn't help that little voice in the back of your mind telling you what you feared most.
“Tomorrow, everything will change.” He continues. “Whether we succeed or fail, whatever happens tomorrow will rock the foundations of this world. But should we fail, you know what I expect of you.”
You press your eyes shut. Yes, you are well aware. The lies you are to tell are already trained and practiced.
But what good would these lies be? To ensure survival, for what? A few more days? What life would you live without him anyway? You couldn't go back to how you were before him.
“I know what you expect of me.” You reply quietly. “But I cannot do it.”
The hand in your hair stops moving immediately.
“What?”
Before you can stop yourself you sit up and face him, all your fears and worries just spilling out of you.
“If you fail, how much more time does this world have? Days? Weeks? I will not spend whatever time I have left denying who you are to me. I will not stay here and call you a monster because that is what they want to hear.”
You barely notice the tears that find their way down your cheeks.
“You do not only hold my heart. You are my heart. What do you think will be left of me should you fail?”
Taking his hands you press kisses in his palms. Never once have you talked back to him before. Never once defied any of his wishes. But this, you will stand with this.
“This world is dying, Vega. You know it is and so am i.” You whisper against his skin. “I will not betray my love for you to live one or two more days.”
Vega looks at you and says nothing. Like a statue cast in marble he watches you, motionless. For a moment you don't know if he is debating your punishment or simply stunned by your sudden outbreak.
“I'm sorry...” You manage to whisper. “I didn't mean-”
Vega moves faster than even a vampire could. In a heartbeat you find yourself on your back, his weight pressing you into the mattress. Not another sound could leave you before his lips seal yours in a fierce kiss, your hands pinned above your head with his strong grip.
When he finally allows you to breathe again his forehead rests against yours.
“Again you surprise me, darling. So fierce and determined. So strong regardless of your soft heart.”
His breath is shaky but he releases your wrists so you can wrap them around his neck to pull him closer.
“We will not fail. And regardless of what will happen, I will stay with you until the very end.”
