Dear Farmers Market Community,
I am pleased to share Down to Earth Markets’ 2024 Impact Report with you. This report is an opportunity for us to look back at what we accomplished in meeting our mission last year and to step back far enough to make observations about our place in the food system as a whole.
In 2024 our founder, Miriam Haas, officially retired. She still visits farmers markets and loves chatting with vendors, but after 33 years turned over the day-to-day work to others. We could say that not a lot has changed since 1991: we rely more than ever on distant origins for our food, consume foods that are highly processed, and wonder about the negative effects of large-scale farming practices. These are all things that drove Miriam to start her first farmers market. On the other hand, we could say that Down to Earth Markets is the change. In 2024, of our nine farmers markets, four marked anniversaries that any small business would be proud of: 33 years for our longest-running market, 20 years for two other markets, and 10 years for a fourth. One of those nine markets was new to our roster and received enormous community support. Farmers markets are a success story in the U.S. food system, having been widely embraced as a means of building community, food security, economic opportunity, and a delicious meal.
Our previous Impact Report took stock of the state of U.S. farming and looked for signs of hope in local food systems. In this report we take the measure of farmers markets against a larger food system that favors monolithic producers and tends to rely on production methods that extract and deplete instead of replenishing. Our yardstick? The ubiquitous carrot. It may surprise you to learn how much the humble root vegetable has to tell us about food in the U.S.
With gratitude for your support and engagement in our work,
Dacotah Rousseau Managing Director
Weekly Goals 7.4.22
Lately I’ve been doing a whole lot of deep thinking about my life and what I want it to be. In general life has this weird tendency to just sort of stream along for me, and I find a lot of time passing without me really achieving (or even setting) any goals. I’ve started getting a lot better lately at recording what I’m doing, and trying to plan things out, and I generally just use a spiral bound notebook to achieve this goal.
I thought that maybe I would start writing some things up in Tumblr as I track my life, just to keep an honest record of what’s going on. I also want to try to have a weekly list of goals and achievements that I’m aiming at, because it also seems like little things often wind up helping to get me momentum to achieve larger goals.
So here is my “small things” goal list for this week:
Craft/Making - I want to make one craft this week, either a happiness explosion card box or a black out poetry book
Reading - I want to read at least one book this week. I started “Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle” by Emily and Amelia Nagoski. I also picked up “Lore Olympus” vol 2 by Rachel Smythe, and “Unlock Your Storybook Heart” by Amanda Lovelace.
Writing - I want to write at least one essay this week. I started an essay about why I left my job as a teen librarian so it might be that one. I have some other ideas, but I want to at least get one whole essay “on paper” this week.
Research topics - Wrestling moves, famous wrestlers and biographies. Van Gogh, Monet, and the Impressionists. Growing native plants in Ohio. The Jedi religion? (not 100% sure on this last one)
Artist’s Date - This one is related to finding inspiration in the world around me. I am going to try to visit the art museum, but I do not currently have this on my schedule yet.
General goals/thoughts - Just generally bringing more of what I love into my life, supporting myself, and surrounding myself with inspiration.

2018-2019 Impact Report
It’s hard to imagine UT Austin without places for students to live, eat, study, workout, organize and get help. That’s where we come in. Our work in the Division of Student Affairs transforms the university. In ways big and small, every day, our dedicated staff members are influencing the Longhorn life.
Our outstanding students, award-winning staff and innovative programs are featured in the 2018-2019 Impact Report. These stories highlight all that our team does to create a world-class college experience.
So take a look at our sixth annual report to see how we are transforming students, programs and lives.
Our Division Impact
The Division of Student Affairs shapes the student experience with “learning by doing” opportunities at UT Austin — from living in a residence hall, joining a student organization or intramural team, to participating in campus-wide events.
Last academic year, 98% of undergraduate students and 89% of enrolled students connected with the Division in some way. These connections are illustrated in our 2017-2018 Impact Report. The report organizes our work into four key themes: growth and transformation, support and advocacy, health and well-being, and student engagement.
Dive into our fifth annual report to see how we help students find community and build essential skills from the moment they arrive on campus through graduation.
