he raises his eyebrows at that, the pen in his hand had been useless until that moment, he had all the notes he wanted but now he put it back to the pad of paper in front of him. he'd been to enough therapy sessions and watched all those doctors closely as they took notes on his words and movements to mimic them. "and how does that make you feel?" tim's voice is flat even as the corners of his lips flip up slightly, it's not a kind smile but it's not cruel either, he's just amused with his own joke.

he looks over to wendy again, brining his pen up to his mouth so that can chew on the cap like he's just really, really paying attention.

"do you think you're more likely to break the law because of your upbringing? do you think it's genetic?" he knows, he knows, he's being unfair with the joke, but sometimes he doesn't quite have it in him to care much. "not saying i think it is of course, that would be unprofessional."

it's been a long few hours camped out on her porch, his rifle rested in one hand, the butt on the floor (safety on) so that his arm doesn't grow tired. he knows that he's faster on the draw then most people should the need arise. they were supposed to relax this weekend. she didn't plan on spending the day stressing out over the bomb james just dropped on them. or, more accurately, lily's slip of the tongue. the bottom line is, bareny knows about his brother's divorce now – he knows a relationship he considered true love fell apart. & damn it, as much as she wants to trust this won't affect the way he thinks about his own wedding, she's scared. he's come so far. they've come so far. & she's terrified of even the slightest possibility that all they've built could come undone. what if she's not strong enough to keep him steady ? what if there's a point where he stops choosing her ? & what if, as small as it seems, this is it ? " barney... " she lets out a breath when she finally stumbles across him, relieved that she got to the front desk before he could supposedly leave the inn. " look, i know this sucks. & i swear to god, lily owes me for the rest of her life for letting it slip, but – if you're freaking out, we can work through it, okay ? just talk to me. "

her friends' happiness is contagious. she's never been one to cry at weddings, but this is completely different. she's never met two people more right for each other – jim & melinda are the perfect picture of soulmates. it's impossible to look at them & not yearn for that same feeling for yourself. obviously, the maid of honor was bound to shed a tear at the ceremony. & she was bound to do it again watching them have their first dance. the only moment of the night where her joy was short-lived is when she'd caught the bouquet. cute tradition & all, but when you're among the very few perpetually single people at a wedding, catching the bouquet feels like a bit of a cruel joke. " hey, do you think i should pass the bouquet to jim's cousin ? " half joke, half completely serious, she grins playfully as she steals melinda from her new husband for a dance to the upbeat song that's just starting to play.
