Első koncertek az új basszusgitárossal / First concerts with the new bassist 🎸🎤
A Queen tehát megtalálta a számára tökéletes basszusgitárost, John Deacon személyében. „Mindannyiunknak nagyon bejött. Annyira magasra tettük a lécet, ő meg csendes, visszahúzódó srácnak tűnt, azt gondoltuk, könnyedén beilleszkedik majd. Ráadásul nagyszerűen basszusgitározott is, az elektronikai tudása pedig határozottan az ő malmára hajtotta a vizet.” – mesélte később Roger.
Az együttes neki állt a próbáknak, hiszen a főiskolai nyári szünet ideje alatt újabb turnéra indultak. A következő fellépésre 1971. július 2-án került sor, a surrey-i főiskolán, körülbelül 80 meghívott ismerős előtt. 9 nappal később az Imperial Collegeban adtak koncertet, mely alkalommal a közönség soraiban foglalt helyet John Anthony is, aki akkoriban az egyik legfelkapottabb producer volt. Anthony a távozásakor annyit mondott, hogy „Hamarosan kereslek titeket…”. A csapat kifejezetten sikeresnek bizonyult, és a szokásos klubok és kocsmák mellett, megtarthatták első szabadtéri koncertjüket is a Tregye County Clubban.
A sikerek ellenére a bandatagok még mindig nem hittek abban, hogy a zenélés előbb utóbb biztos megélhetést nyújthatna számukra, így a koncertek után Brian, John és Roger folytatták a tanulmányaikat. Freddienek azonban már nem voltak tanulmányai, amihez visszatérhetett volna, így grafikusi munkákat vállalt, valamint egy cipőboltban is dolgozott beugrósként. Úgy tűnt a Queen megint egy helyben toporog. Freddienek rá kellett jönnie, hogy az eddigi hozzáállással nem lesz olyan karrier, mint amilyenről álmodozik. Ahhoz, hogy ez megvalósuljon, sokkal komolyabban kell venniük a zenélést. „Egy idő után eljön a döntés ideje, hogy az ember kilép-e az ismeretlenbe, olyankor vagy azt mondod, hogy igenis megteszem, és csak erre koncentrálok, vagy nem. Mi megtettük.” – mondta Freddie.

So the Queen has found the perfect bass player for their, John Deacon. “We really like him. We raised the bar so high and he looked like a quiet, retreating guy, we thought he would fit in easily. In addition, he was great at bass guitar and his electronics skills were impressive.” - Roger later said.
The band was ready for rehearsals as they embarked on another tour during college summer break. The next performance took place on July 2, 1971, at the Surrey College in front of about 80 invited acquaintances. Nine days later, they gave a concert at Imperial College, when John Anthony, one of the most sought after producers at the time, in the audience. On leaving, Anthony said, "I'll be looking for you soon ...". The team was extremely successful, and in addition to the usual clubs and pubs, they were able to hold their first outdoor concert at the Tregye County Club.
Despite the success, band members still did not believe that music could make a living for them sooner, so after the concerts Brian, John and Roger continued their studies. However, Freddie had no studies to return to, so he took on graphic work and worked in a shoe store. The Queen seemed to be in the spot again. Freddie had to realize that the attitude he had had so far would not be the kind of career he was dreaming of. For this to happen, they need to take music much more seriously. “After a while, the time comes to decide whether one goes out into the unknown, whether you say I do and I focus on that or not. We did.” - said Freddie.
