daddy issues call that the oedipus complex
The Mage was stood out on their tiny balcony, shivering but smiling in the cold when Kurogane found him and dragged him back into the promised warmth of their bedroom, cloak already wrapped around Fai's shoulders to warm him. He only glimpses back to the street, but he saw the trio in the snow, two blond men draped over a darker man twice their size, all enjoying a walk together.
At first, when they had seen their third set of twins, Fai had felt a pang of jealousy that he wished had surprised him. Was it only he who had lost his brother? Was he the only one who would have to know the bone deep solitude that came with lacking his other half?
It had passed blessedly quickly as he watched faces so familiar and happy laugh and talk and hold each other close like he and Fai had done as frightened children before even that had been ripped from them. Now as he looked down on to the street he thought that if it meant never having to part the brothers in any other world he would bare the pain, suffer that hole in his heart that nothing and no one, no matter how dear and beloved, could ever fill.
So wrapped up in watching the pair was he that he didn’t notice Kurogane coming up behind him until warm arms pulled him into a chest and wrapped a cloak around his shivering shoulders. As they stood there they could hear the exclamations all the way from their balcony as a familiar looking man, all dark colors and self assured gait, drew even with the twins. Fai watched as they draped themselves happily over the man, a kiss on each cheek of his from each of them in greeting. The quiet echos of indiscernible conversation followed Fai to the doorway that Kurogane led him through. Fai managed to see Kurogane’s face soften as he too spotted the trio. It seemed that where Fai and Yuui were there was a tall and brooding young man not far behind. It was nice, Fai thought. Someone needed to watch out for the two of them and the twins needed someone to love outside of each other.
He wondered after their families, what their lives were like and what relationships they had. Maybe one day he’d pluck up the courage to speak to them, maybe one day he’d be in a situation where he didn’t get the option of cowardice. Until then he’d wonder quietly to himself.
